Genres: New Adult, Romance

He was my therapist.

She was my client.

He’s the person I lean on and turn to.

She’s the person who brings me relief when there seems to be none.

He makes me smile and laugh when anxiety and depression consume me.

She helps me breathe when depression is choking me.

I don’t know how to live without him.

I don’t know how to be honest with her.

Are we driving each other mad?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

He’s quiet, lost in his own head, and most likely, he’s still worrying. So far, with this thing we have going on, he’s never really pulled away from me. Although, the opportunity hasn’t been there before either. That scares the hell out of me. He’s my rock, always has been. How am I supposed to stay steady and strong with him cracking?

When we walk outside and he goes to open the passenger door for me, I stop him. “Trace,” I start, but no other words come.

He sighs. The cold air is making his breath visible. “I know, Britt. I know.” He pulls me against him and wraps his arms around me. I’m glad he knows because I sure don’t. My head rests on his chest, my arms firmly around him, and I relish in the feel of his big, strong, sturdy body. We stand there in silence for about a minute. “It’s going to be hard, you know.”

“Why?” Why does it have to be hard? Why does everything have to be so damn hard all the damn time?

“Because we’re both not quite sane,” he says with a half-sigh and half-serious tone.

I can’t help it; I laugh. I turn my face inward to press my forehead against his jacket, and I can’t stop freaking giggling. We’re not crazy; but he’s right. We’re not quite sane either.

CHAPTER 1:

“Sex sex sex is that all you ever think about?” My roommates high pitch laughter brings my mind back to the here and now.

“What? Just because I’d like to leave my teeth marks in the pizza guys ass doesn’t mean I am having sex.”

“No Brogan it doesn’t but you should be your mind is always in the gutter. ”

This is true, I can’t deny my thoughts had moved from his ass to his anatomy in the front. Damn it. Cadence knows me too well. We became immediate friends our first day of college. Eight years later, she’s the only person, outside my brother Zade, I trust. I would give my life for either one of them.

“Cady don’t you have anything better to do than harass me about my sex life?”

“Ha!” a snort of laughter escapes her lips. “Admittedly, you have no sex life Brogan, that’s why we are sitting at home on a Saturday night eating pizza and watching a chick flick. Besides, I felt the need to protect the pizza boys ass from your teeth.”

“I love you dearly Cady, but why are you spending a Saturday night with me rather than with your hot to trot boy toy?”

“Brogan!” she yells in an irritated tone. “He’s my finance not just some boy toy! I swear sometimes I don’t get you. What is it with you and your lack of belief in love. You are gorgeous, smart, funny, have a great job, mad skills, much less a body to die for. Everywhere we go men drool all over you and you could care less.”

“Cady men only love what they see, they dont see the real me. You know my shit Cady. You know all my secrets. If you were a guy once you got past my looks you would run too.”

“Yes Brogan, I know your shit and I love you anyway, probably because of your shit and who I know you are, just as anyone would if you would give them more than a minute.

“Love is not for me or anything I ever want. I am glad you have Jon and that you will have your happily ever after. That is what you want and need Cady, not me. My only love comes from a pair of double a batteries.” Cady spews coke across the room. I love embarrassing her, she’s just so innocent when it comes to sex. Her sex life with Jon is plain old vanilla. Her cell phone rings and she’s running off to her room giggling like a young girl in love.

My favorite movie The Notebook is on, but I’m not hearing any of it. I am lost in my own dark thoughts. Chills run down my spine and I am suddenly cold and I shudder at old ghosts.

Cady and I graduated with are Bachelors in Nursing at 22. I continued on to be a Nurse PR actioner. At 27, we have both found jobs that we love. Cady works at a local hospital as a critical care nurse. I work in a Plastic Surgeons office three days a week in a nearby town. We live in a small cottage on the bayside of the island of Redington off of Florida. It’s a very small town, one way in and one way out other than boat, which is my preferred way to travel. My first purchase when I moved here was a 26ft Regal with a cabin. I would live on it, but Cady would call me a hermit and invade my small space. Cady and Jon are getting married at the beginning of next summer and moving to Jacksonville were Jon is Interning to be a Cardiologist. I will probably live on my boat at that time, but for now, I’m enjoying the roominess of our cottage.

Cady cries every time she thinks about leaving me and begs me to go with them. I am happy here. It’s peaceful. I have no fears, no worries and I plan on keeping it that way. I will desperately miss her, but I will let her go.

The credits are now rolling, it’s late. I peek in on Cady and she is curled up sound asleep. I slip into my favorite sleeping shirt and swallow an Ambien. Every night I tell myself this will be the last night I take one, but then a wave of terror runs through me and I willing gulp it down. Thank god the effects kick in quickly, I hate being alone in the dark.

I wake up with a jolt, the clock reads 3:21a.m. I am soaking wet from head to toe. My only solace, thanks to my sleeping pill, is that I don’t remember my nightmares. But I know there are demons behind my eyelids and I shiver with the knowledge that I know what they are really about and from where they come.

I go ahead and get up. I know there will be no more sleep. I quietly slip-on my running clothes and shoes, careful to not wake Cady. I grab my phone and earbuds, slip out the door and crank up Cruise by Florida George Line, the remix version with Nelly.

One good thing about a small town is the safety you feel and running this time of morning is beautiful. I run until I’m exhausted. I always stop on the beach until the sun is up. I breathe in the fresh air, it is so cathartic. Life has never been so simple and I cherish it because I know one day everything will catch up with me and it will all fall apart.

Review of Anything For Her by Jack Jordan

Goodreads/Amazon
Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Release date: June 21, 2015

Publisher: JJP

Goodreads blurb:

Sometimes the past comes back to haunt you.
Louise Leighton’s life has fallen apart, all because of one fateful night. Her husband is an adulterer, her sister is his mistress, and soon, Louise will lose everything she owns. But she never imagined she would lose her daughter.
Eighteen-year-old Brooke Leighton is missing. It’s up to Louise and the Metropolitan Police to find her. Has Brooke run away? Or has she been taken against her will? And can Louise aid the investigation without mentioning the night where all of her troubles began?
If she mentions that night, she will incriminate her daughter for heinous crimes. But if she doesn’t, she may never find Brooke; and if she has been abducted, the person who took her may come for Louise, too.
Sometimes the past comes back to kill you.

Review:

Some of you may remember my glowing review of Jordan’s second novel, My Girl. That book made me so excited to get my hands on his debut novel, Anything For Her and I couldn’t wait to read it. It’s similar in many ways as the chapters are short, intense and fast paced. The main characters are also both tormented women who are haunted and destroyed by their past. Anything For Her allows all the members of the Leighton family to share their viewpoints. There’s the mother, Louise, father Michael, daughter Brooke and son Dominic. A big difference here for me is that the characters in this book were all, with the exception of Dominic, completely awful and despicable people. I couldn’t relate to any of them whatsoever, yet I still cared enough to know what was going to happen to them.

Right from the start, Louise flees to the Cotswalds, which provides the perfect creepy and eerie setting for the events that unfold. There’s one particular scene that takes place in a barn that gave me chills.

It took until about halfway through the book to even begin to find out what happened on That Night. The suspense leading up to the reveal killed me in the best possible way. When the main climax and big reveal happened I was shocked, horrified and found myself gasping.
Jordan has a way of following his characters during the absolute worst times in their lives and makes the reader question how they think they would handle themselves if the unthinkable happened to you and your family. Would you make the same choices as they did? How does one really know what they would do in a horrifying situation until you are staring it in its ugly face?

Fair warning, this book has portions that are violently graphic, but I feel they are necessary to the storyline. Nothing gratuitous. I don’t wanna reveal too much, but this book takes the reader on a ride full of secrets, betrayal, cover ups, mysterious stalkers, and the stark desperation of a family trying to keep it all together.

My one slight complaint is that I wish there would’ve been more character development in both Michael and Louise’s sister Denise. I would’ve liked to know more about Louise and Denise’s relationship before the affair. What kind of woman sleeps with her brother in law? With Michael I would have liked to hear more about the events that led up to his demise. What exactly did he do and how was he caught?

Before I met Harley, this was who I was. A man who used whatever he wanted to use to forget the darkness of his past. A man who hurt to hide his hurt. And a man who lied to hide the truth. When I came home and woke up from surgery, Bach kept me in the dark for some time before he told me the truth. He’d taken my girl when he promised to watch out for her. Ever since that day, I’d let the lies go and slid back into my old skin.
This was Dylan Meyer.

Silhouette of Asian business man walk with confidence, full length portrait isolated on white. Rear view.

EXCERPT:

I step closer until she finally raises her head and sees me.

Her eyes, hidden under thick lashes, sparkle with enthusiasm as she looks up at me. She playfully bites her lip as I approach, and I reciprocate with an added tongue swipe.

Her brow rises as I place my hand on her hip, pulling her closer toward me.

She hesitates a second, but when the beat drops, her hands slide up to my shoulders, and she starts to dance. The friction between us is undeniable, her ass swaying side to side against my hands. I cop a feel, which she doesn’t seem to mind. We inch closer and closer, her eyes irresistible, but her mouth even more so. When our lips almost touch, her lips part.

“Who are you?” she whispers.

“Call me John …” I murmur.

“John who?”

“John Doe.”

She smirks. “Your real name.”

I twirl her around in my arm and lean on her shoulder, my lips dangerously close to her neck. She takes in a sharp breath of air as my teeth graze her skin, my breath probably already setting her on fire.

“Do you really want to know?”

Slowly, she nods her head.

“Hmm … all right. Because you’re so curious. Let’s do two questions.”

“Two?”

“You ask me a question, I answer, then I ask you a question, and you answer.”

“Okay. Who goes first?” she asks.

“You.” I smirk.

“Why did you pick me?”

“I saw you in your high heels and your tight skirt. I like how you looked back,” I whisper, licking my lips. “My turn. Do you like to dance with strangers?”

“Is that a real question?”

“Ah-ah,” I say. “Can’t answer with a question.”

“Okay. Well, then I guess … maybe?”

“Hmm …”

Her hips grind against mine as we lose ourselves in the music. My body close to hers, it’s almost as if we’re becoming one. We don’t know each other … and that makes it perfect.

“My turn,” she says. “Do you do this often?”

“Yes.”

“That’s not really an answer,” she says.

“Then don’t ask a question that can be answered with just one word,” I muse.

She sighs. “You’re a know-it-all, aren’t you?”

“I just like games and rules,” I say with an arrogant smile. “Last one … What would you say if I took you home tonight and fucked you like you’ve never been fucked before?”

She sucks in a short breath.

I place a hand over her mouth. “Don’t answer yet. Dance with me first.”

We dance some more, my hands incapable of staying off her. As I become heady from the lust, I press a soft, succulent kiss on her neck, which creates goose bumps all over her body. Her body melts in my arms, and my cock stiffens in response.

“I can’t control myself …” I whisper into her ear.

She twists around in my arms again, and we dance closer than before, my hands on her body in places they shouldn’t be. She leans in, so I go in for the kill.

I kiss her full on the lips, enjoying the spicy taste of her drink.

She kisses me back just as fervently, and I take it as a sign to kiss her harder, faster. I show her what’s in store for her if she goes home with me. And right when she becomes needy, I stop, pull back, and let her suck in the empty air.

“Are you game?” I ask.

“Yeah …” she mutters under a heavy breath.

“No names. No numbers.”

“Isn’t that dangerous?”

“Fuck yes, it is.”

“Hmmm …” A smile forms on her lips. “I like dangerous.”

Review of Baby Doll by Hollie Overton

Goodreads/Amazon/Author Website
Release date: July 12, 2016

Publisher: Redhook

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Goodreads blurb:
Held captive for eight years, Lily has grown from a teenager to an adult in a small basement prison. Her daughter Sky has been a captive her whole life. But one day their captor leaves the deadbolt unlocked.

This is what happens next…

…to her twin sister, to her mother, to her daughter…and to her captor.

Review:

Most missing persons mystery novels primarily deal with the main characters abduction and what happens next. This book puts a unique and clever twist on the general concept and begins with Lily and her daughter Sky’s escape. I’ve often wondered how characters in other similar novels coped in the aftermath of horrific abuse and this book shed some light on this. How does one move on after having their entire life cruelly taken away from them?

Right from the start this book is fast paced and addicting. The chapters are on the shorter side and are told from many different perspectives; Lily who has been held prisoner in a basement for eight years, her twin sister Abby, their mother Eve and her kidnapper Rick. While I enjoyed seeing everyone’s viewpoint, I had a sick fascination with Rick’s narrative. He is unapologetically evil and will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

The relationship between Lily and Abby was heartbreaking and honest. They share a completely unbreakable bond that not even something purely evil can break. The power of sisterhood and especially twins is revealed beautifully throughout this novel. It deals with how far one would go to protect loved ones?

There is so much I could say about why I loved this book but secrets would be revealed. There is a constant barrage of unexpected twists and turns that never lets up. The characters lives are intertwined and twisted together in unfathomable ways. This book is fresh, unique and full of suspense.

Thanks to Netgalley and Redhook for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
