1955. Two young couples move to the uninhabited, isolated fjord of Hedinsfjörður. Their stay ends abruptly when one of the women meets her death in mysterious circumstances. The case is never solved. Fifty years later an old photograph comes to light, and it becomes clear that the couples may not have been alone on the fjord after all…

In nearby Siglufjörður, young policeman Ari Thór tries to piece together what really happened that fateful night, in a town where no one wants to know, where secrets are a way of life. He’s assisted by Ísrún, a news reporter in Reykjavik, who is investigating an increasingly chilling case of her own. Things take a sinister turn when a child goes missing in broad daylight. With a stalker on the loose, and the town of Siglufjörður in quarantine, the past might just come back to haunt them.

Review:

Welcome to my stop on the Rupture blog tour!

I read Snowblind just a few days ago then immediately had to start Rupture to read more of Jonasson’s gorgeous writing and to find out more about the intriguing Ari Thor. There’s just something about him that’s captivating and leaves you wanting more.

The residents of Siglufjörður are in a panic because a serious illness was brought to their community by an out of towner. When the man dies then someone else falls ill, they are quarantined and a bit of hysteria ensues. Ari Thor is one of the few people that still leaves his house as he has to work even though there isn’t much keeping him busy at the moment. When he’s approached by Hedinn, a man with some questions about an old and mysterious family photograph, he welcomes the distraction.  He enlists the help of Isrun, a news reporter who is juggling multiple stories. What they uncover is a dark family secret which some serious implications for the future.

There are a few storylines running alongside each other here. First, Ari Thor is digging into the old photo from the fifties that’s linked to a cold case that was apparently solved, but he’s not so sure, then Isrun is covering the kidnapping of a child, and finally a politicians son is run over and killed. When links are discovered it’s very clear that someone is hell bent on revenge, but who? And why?

No one does atmospheric more beautifully than Jonasson, and one of my favorite scenes in Rupture was when Ari Thor and the local priest visit Hedinsfjörður to follow a lead about the photograph taken there. It’s completely uninhabited now and is totally dark and deserted when they visit. I’m not one to be afraid of the dark yet I found myself a bit panicky and anxious for them to hurry up and get out of there, it was very chilling and creepy.

Jonasson’s writing style is very purposeful and totally unmatched by anyone else. Every single word has a meaning deeper than its literal definition, yet there is a simplicity and a quiet gentleness about it. Despite this elegant approach, he is still able to convey a quiet intensity that is more powerful than an in your face approach. He’s very cautious about what he reveals to the reader only letting you in on secrets when the timing is absolutely perfect.

This is another classic murder mystery with an icy Icelandic twist, so very perfect for a winter read. As always, the characterization is deep, rich and complex which adds another layer to the story. I can’t say enough good things about this book or the author, just go ahead and read this series already.

Overall rating: 4/5

Thanks to the lovely Karen at Orenda Books for my review copy.

Inspiration

Inspiration can come from any number of sources – a life experience, a fleeting yet compelling observation, or perhaps an unforgettable dream. For me it’s been all of the above and then some. I believe every writer draws from personal experience and any creative person tends to possess keen observation skills.

My younger daughter is a graphic designer and art director. I can see her eyes light up when inspiration strikes. I may not understand what it is that caught her attention, but when she’s done setting up her shot and I see the final product of what she’s created, then I understand.

The same is true for my eldest who choreographs dance routines. She’ll hear a piece of music that speaks to her and it’s as though a light switch was turned on and I can see her eyes dancing as her mind begins to create.

The smallest seemingly insignificant moments can be the most inspirational of all. Each year my family and I attend the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival. It’s a crowded park at that time of the year. Actually, it’s always pretty crowded, but during the festival there are lines of people waiting to sample food & alcoholic beverages from kiosks that represent dozens of countries. I was sitting on a bench waiting for my family and I noticed a young couple that was each sampling one of the offerings. It was apparent that the young man enjoyed what he’d tasted and he brought the wax paper clad pastry up to his girlfriend’s lips. He watched her eagerly, hoping she would enjoy it as much as he did and smiled when her reaction was the same as his. He then sweetly brushed off a flake of pastry from her bottom lip and gently kissed her. The whole exchange couldn’t have been more than fifteen seconds but it stuck with me. There was so much love in the young man’s gestures. I could see from that tiny slice of their life that he cared deeply for her and it moved me. I decided I would work that sweet moment into one of my stories. (Hint – It’s in Waiting For Aegina)

I began writing my first novel, Evanthia’s Gift, when my mother passed away. It had always been in the back of my mind to write, but I’d always dismissed the idea until this life-altering event and inspiration was born from grief. The story I had always played with in my mind grew from as simple love story to a family saga when I created a character that honored the essence of my mother’s heart and soul.

My mother like her mother before hernever wanted to leave this earth, and they especially didn’t want to leave their family. My grandmother, who we called Yiayiá, would say in heavily accented English, ‘Don’t forget me,’ years before she had to worry about dying. My mother promised to always be with us and watch over us. And I believe she has done just that. I’ve had several dreams since I’ve lost her. Ones that contained an important message. I’ve used those dreams as inspiration although I changed the details and used them in a different context.

In 2004 I reluctantly attended my thirtieth high school reunion. The committee chairperson, an old friend I hadn’t seen since those school days, contacted me repeatedly until I finally agreed to attend. I ended up having a wonderful time and reconnected with many old friends. We became a close-knit group, and twelve years later, we still get together. Because of this, the idea came to me to write a fictionalized story about a circle of friends who grew up together. I added these friends to Book One: Evanthia’s Gift as secondary characters, but in Book Two: Waiting For Aegina they are the focus of they story and each have their own subplot.

Although there may be bits and pieces of my friends in these women they are purely a figment of my imagination. I thought back to those days when we were young and idealistic and remembered what we all thought we would be doing with our lives years later. I expected to be a successful actor. There was a 1:1,000,000 chance of that! I was certain one of my friends would be a fashion designer and another a very important politician. Neither is the case in their real lives but my teenage ideals for them was inspiration enough for me to develop completely new characters with different histories, backgrounds and physical attributes from my friends.

I’m not sure where my next idea will come from—something I see in the newspaper or overhear at the dining table next to me when I’m out to lunch—who knows? There’s a world of possibilities out there.

Review:

Welcome to my second stop on the blog tour for Corrupt Me. If you missed my first one, you can find it here. I’m so excited to share my thoughts today.

I have to start by talking about the characters here, as much as I loved the plot they were my favorite aspect. Izzie is such a bad ass, I want to be her. Yes, she’s gorgeous but that’s not why I envy her, she’s also strong, confident, bold and she doesn’t take shit from anyone. She may be young but she doesn’t scare easily and her loyalty is admirable. If Izzie loves you, she considers you family and she will do anything to protect the ones she loves. At first glance Luca seems like a typical fraternity douche bag. Thank god there is more to him than meets the eye, though by Quinn’s descriptions he’s pretty easy on the eyes. Despite being the son of Philly’s mob boss he has a sweet and tender side that made me melt.

Izzie and Luca together were adorable and sexy. I loved that she wasn’t easily swayed by his charms, he’s used to women falling at his feet so to see him struggle was endearing and cute. Their chemistry is HOT, you can feel the electricity in the air and when they finally hook up, it’s beyond sexy and spicy.

Besides the two captivating main characters, I loved some others as well, especially Luca’s mom. She’s a typical Italian mother, but she was so sweet with both Luca and Izzie that I found myself wanting an invite to one of her famous Sunday dinners. Izzie’s best friend Silvia was also so much fun, everyone needs a friend like her.

While the plot is heavily centered around
Izzie and Luca’s love story, I loved all the mafia stuff going on as well. The danger, the FBI involvement, the gambling, is all exciting and added some awesome suspense to the story. As a fan of well wrapped up ending, I totally appreciated the epilogue which answered all of my pending questions and even surprised me as well. I just have one question for Jill, when is book two?!

Overall rating: 4.5/5

Thanks to the author for my signed copy, I’ll treasure it always.

Except:

The thrill of doing something wrong, waiting to be caught in the act, always seemed more exciting than sex. Maybe there was something wrong with me, an inner sickness that I needed to address. For whatever reason, those small victories would get my juices flowing.

We yell-laughed, skirting around innocent bystanders, as we made our victory lap. Oblivious to my surroundings, my celebration ended faster than it had begun as I crashed headfirst into a thick wall of hunky man flesh. It happened so fast that I hadn’t had time to brace myself for impact, doing a half flip along with him. He landed on his back with me face-planting on top of him, my breasts pressed against his chin.

Of all the people to bump into, it had to be Luca Marchese. His cocky grin made my lip curl with revulsion even though he seemed to have the opposite effect on my nipples. One glance from him, and they betrayed me.

“Hey, princess.” His voice was deeper, sexier, than I remembered from class.

I blushed ten shades of pink from my cheeks to my neck, distracted by denim-blue irises set under dark brows. I rolled my eyes, attempting to peel myself off his bare chest, but he grabbed my wrists.

“Not so fast. I think you owe me an explanation.”

“I don’t owe you shit.”

I wiggled free from his grasp, straddling him without meaning to. I held his arms flat against the grass. Our faces were inches apart as I hovered over him, the sexual tension burning between us like a lit match. We shared a short-lived moment until his eyes found my breasts again, and he winked.

“Perv,” I said through clenched teeth.

Lean muscles brushed against my legs as he moved.

“What? You can’t fault me for checking you out”—he tilted his head to the side, his gaze falling over each of my curves—“especially when you’re shoving some of your best features in my face.”

He propped himself up onto his elbow and reached for my waist with his other hand, but I swatted his hand before he could touch me.

“You’re a feisty one. Got a mouth on you, too.” A fire blazed behind those beautiful blue eyes. “What I’d like to do with that dirty mouth of yours,” he said, rolling his tongue over his lip.

Damn, he had nice lips, both full and perfect. Every part of me wanted to lean in and kiss him and shove my fingers through his dark waves. No boy had ever affected me this way. But he was a man, not a boy. With radiant olive skin, chiseled features, and toned in all the right places, he could be a model.

My breath hitched at his comment.

I wasn’t sure, but I swore I could feel his erection pressing against my thigh, which should have freaked me out. Instead, I looked down, irritated that it turned me on more than I cared to admit.

Blog Tour: Witness by Caroline Mitchell @Caroline_writes #witness

Goodreads|Amazon|Author Website
Release date: December 20, 2016

Publisher: Thomas and Mercer

Genre: Psychological Thriller

Blurb:

To Rebecca it was a brave decision that led to her freedom from domestic abuse. To Solomon it was the ultimate betrayal.

It’s been ten years since Rebecca’s testimony saw Solomon locked away. Enough time for the nightmares to recede, the nerves to relax; enough time to rebuild her life and put the past behind her.

Then one day a phone rings in her bedroom—but it’s not her phone. Solomon has been in her home, and has a very simple message for her: for each of the ten years he has spent in jail, Rebecca must witness a crime. And, to make matters worse, she has to choose the victims.

Fail to respond and you get hurt. Talk to police and you die. Ready to play? You have sixty seconds to decide…

As the crimes grow more severe, the victims closer to home, Rebecca is forced to confront a past she had hoped was gone forever.

Review:

I’m thrilled to be one of the stops on the blog tour for Witness today! When I found out Caroline Mitchell was publishing her first psychological thriller with Thomas and Mercer I just knew I had to read it as soon as possible. She’s firmly cemented herself on my list of auto buy authors and fans of her work will be totally floored by Witness.

The premise of this book simultaneously creeped me out and intrigued me. Imagine having a psychopathic creep from your past come back only to force you to play a sick game. That’s what happens to Rebecca, it’s been ten years since she played a huge role in sending Solomon to prison but now he’s back, and he’s out for blood. He wants revenge in the worst way possible and toying with Rebecca is one of his favorite games to play. She must pick someone she knows to be the victim of a crime, ten different people, one for each year he was locked up.

This is told from both Rebecca’s and Solomon’s point of view and there are also entries from Rebecca’s diary that she kept back when her and Solomon were engaged. The details of their twisted and frightening past are told in brief snippets which had me hanging on every word. I was desperate to know what had really happened back then and could feel Rebecca’s fear and hopelessness leaping from the pages. Solomon is such a creepy and menacing character, the part that scared me the most was that he was able to blend in when it suited him and most people had no idea how sick and depraved he really was.

Mitchell has a tricky writing style that is alluring as she ends almost every single chapter with a mini cliffhanger making it a quick read as you can’t bear to put it down. I found myself holding my breath plenty of times while reading as I contemplated just how Rebecca would get herself out of this terrifying situation? The poor thing had already escaped Solomon once and now she has to do it again?  Except this time it’s worse as she has a husband and a daughter to worry about and every decision she makes has the power to not only affect the ones she loves the most, but it also makes her question herself. She struggles with her morality and sense of what’s right and wrong and is constantly faced with impossible tasks. I’m shivering just thinking about it again!

Fans of psychological thrillers will enjoy this one, and fans of standard mystery/thrillers will also love this as there are twists and secrets hidden along the way. The tension was constantly mounting right up until the end and I just now finally feel like I can breathe normally again after that suspenseful ride!

Overall rating: 5/5

Dark Minds is a collection of 40 crime and thriller short stories from authors including; Louise Jensen, L.J. Ross, Lisa Hall, Steven Dunne, Betsy Reavley, M.A. Comley, Alex Walters and Anita Waller plus many more.

Review:

I have to start by saying that the proceeds from the sale of this brilliant collection go to two very worthy causes, Sophie’s Appeal and Hospice UK. I’m honored to be one of the stops for the blog tour today and can’t wait to tell you all about this phenomenal compilation. Check out the book trailer as well.

Since there are forty stories in this collection I won’t review every single one separately, but I do want to mention that as a whole they are fantastic. There were none I actively disliked, I really enjoyed something about each of them. I’ll highlight my favorite ones, but there really is something for everyone here, especially if you’re a thriller fan. I haven’t read many short stories but this experience opened up my eyes and made me realize how enjoyable it can be. Who knew a few pages could pack such a huge punch?

The Shoes Maketh the Man by Louise Jensen

Being a huge Jensen fan I was ecstatic to see she was one of the participating authors for Dark Minds. Her story is about an elderly man named Bill who’s wife Maureen has passed leaving him a widow.  Pensioners are being murdered in his area, is he next? It was creepy and pulled off quite a twist within a few pages.

Never Tell a Lie by Tara Lyons

This is about an un named man who has an obsession with a beautiful woman named Fiona who he meets when she visits the coffee shop where he works. It’s obsessive, dark and menacing.

By The Water by Betsy Reavley

Christine wakes up in a mental institution and has no idea why or what happened to land her there. Freaks me out just thinking about it! This was very chilling.

Slow Roast Pork by S. E. Lynes

An un named woman this time who’s husband, Peter disappears. She seems distraught but does she know where he is? Or is she just a good actress? This was chilling in its intensity.
Sticky Fingers by J. T. Lawrence

Nikki is a kleptomaniac, she’s not hurting for money she’s actually a wealthy housewife. She just can’t help herself, but is her time finally up? I loved the glimpse into her twisted mind and thought processes.

Hidden by K. A. Richardson

Don’t want to say anything besides it is extremely creepy and graphic but excellent in its depravity.

I’ve Gone by Anita Waller

Laura’s husband Kevin is missing all that’s left is a note that says I’ve gone. This one was heartbreaking and shocking.
Be Careful What You Wish for by Peter Best

Sammy has found herself unwittingly entangled with the mafia in NYC. This is very action packed and there are twists until the very last sentence.

Dangerous Actions by M. A. Comley

Joanne and Beth  are two best friends who meet a new guy on Facebook but social media can be deadly… I can’t say much more than that, but I was thoroughly impressed!
Captive by Stephen Edger

Daisy is kidnapped by Tim when she’s 6. There is quite a lot of action and intensity for a short story. My pulse was pounding as waited to see what her fate would be.

That’s just a taste of what this amazing collection has to offer, there are so many excellent stories that you have to read for yourself! It’s SUCH a good cause, grab your copy, you won’t be disappointed. (Buy links are at the top of this post)

About the book:

Hell’s Gate: an explosive, gritty and utterly gripping new crime thriller

A policeman on a mission.

A killer who will stop at nothing.

The formidable DCI Cyril Bennett and DS David Owen of Harrogate Police find themselves embroiled in a series of bizarre events.

A domestic dog attack on a child soon leads to a more complex case – the macabre discovery of a jigsaw of featureless, indiscernible body parts amongst bin bags littering a quiet road on the outskirts of the town.

While under the leadership of a Chinese Mafioso, a team of Eastern Europeans spreads its tentacles into the sordid underworld of people trafficking, dog fighting, prostitution and murder.

Bennett quickly has his hands full investigating a gambling syndicate, the discovery of a mutilated corpse, the death of a prostitute and the case of a badly beaten police officer.

As Bennett and his team are stretched to capacity cracks begin to appear.

Is there a link between these cases and can they catch a twisted killer before he strikes again?

Extract:

Chapter One

The cold had a cruel habit of creeping slowly into his bones once he was tucked away from the dissipating day’s heat. Even the new cardboard bedding he’d dragged in seemed suddenly damp. He twisted the cork from the bottle of cheap brandy and allowed the amber liquid to tumble to the back of his throat but even that failed to take away the insidious chill. At least he felt safe. This place was fairly secure and unaffected by the vagaries of the weather, although the constant, cutting draught that permeated through the grilled, yet open entrance seemed to constantly gnaw at him. He was, however, tucked well into the manhole that had been expertly crafted into the stone wall’s façade and this was, for him, a psychological cocoon that he failed to find out on The Stray.

A small candle flickered weakly, illuminating dimly his grim surroundings. Bulging black bin bags of clothes were stuffed casually into the corners of his temporary accommodation. White needle-like stalactites hung from the brick, arched ceiling and the occasional flying bat distracted his eye. It was his fifth night in his new dwelling and he liked its darkness and security.

It had been a squeeze getting through the entrance bars. He had attempted entry on other occasions but the grids were too secure. However, this time they had seemed looser. Had he been capable, metaphorically, of reading the illegible graffiti on the wall, he might not have entered. He might have turned and found another shelter, but the dry, secure home, despite the constant sound of dripping water, was worth the trouble and the degree of risk. He looked at his shaking hand in the flickering, yellowy light; nails black and grimy. He had not always been this way, once he had had a family, a job, a home and a car but…the drink and the gambling had seen an end to such comforts. He could not now recall which hurdle had tripped him first and really he did not care. He took out his wallet, empty apart from three photographs. He looked at each in the dim flicker of candlelight and the images brought him a degree of warmth that was sadly tainted by the bitterness brought to the lump in his throat by his own selfish immaturity. He pulled the wallet to his chest and whispered the words, “Forgive me!”

It was the unexpected noise near the entrance that made the vagrant’s heart beat more strongly and instinctively he blew out the candle. Hot, molten wax spilled onto his hand. The last thing he wanted was a gang of youths pissing about and tormenting him. He cocked his head and looked towards the echoing, alien sounds. Lights, thin white beams, danced around the arched roof like ancient searchlights, enlarging and deforming shadows and human features. He squashed himself tightly into the corner and prayed they would leave. His anxiety was real and suddenly he felt no cold, just the warmth of the fear he had so often experienced; he knew all about man’s intolerance of man.

The human snuffling and snorting sounded more porcine than human, growing deeper as the youth was manhandled through the grid. Even though the youth was fully aware that his efforts were useless, vapour streamed from both his nostrils, his chest heaved as he squirmed and struggled. Tears had already begun to blur his vision and streams of snot dribbled onto the knotted cloth that filled his mouth, blocking breath and conscious sound alike.

Hands on the youth’s shoulders forced him downward. The discarded garden seat on to which he was dragged was wet and cold against his naked buttocks, the steel frame rusty and rough against his sweating skin. His clothes had been discarded some time ago. Mud oozed between his toes and he could feel the sharp pain where broken glass and pieces of stone had punctured the soft soles of his feet. The people around him proved difficult to see; each wore a powerful head torch that created a contrast between blinding lights, silhouettes and shadows. Occasionally, when one head turned to the other, he identified the familiar faces of those surrounding him, once his friends. Large, electrical ties secured his elbows behind him, pushing out his chest pigeon-like. All seemed to grow quiet apart from the occasional plop of water hitting some distant, dark puddle but it was the next occurrence that the frightened youth could never have anticipated.

There seemed a moment of absolute silence where satanic forces grew more alive, co-operating fully with the present evil; even the falling droplets co-operated but the quiet was short lived. Hands forced the elastic band of a torch around his head holding it in position just above the eyebrows. The figure directly in front was handed a staple gun and immediately the sharp pain made his body twitch as the thin, metal staple penetrated the skin on his forehead and then splayed against his skull, trapping band to flesh. Blood trickled down his sweat-wet face and blended with the snail-path of snot, then another click of the gun, more pain and then another. Quickly the band was stitched to his head.

“We’ll need to be able to see your progress, you shit! We’ll need to see where you go and we don’t want you to lose the light. The switch will be broken. There’s only one way to run and that’s what you do well, right little runaway? But you failed at that last time you were caught and brought home. This time you need to win or else…The way you run is that way. Get on top of the wall and you’ll be safe, you’ll be given another chance, just one more chance, but fail, and nobody will hear from you again.”

The face moved closer and the garlic vapour, like a small cloud, filled his nostrils. It was pungent but somehow ridiculously reassuring that he had eaten the same meal. His mind spun, he recognised his error and his recklessness, definitely foolish and certainly inexcusable. Blood dripped onto his thigh before running down his leg to be diluted in the stinking mud. The penetrating beams of light hurt his eyes. It suddenly seemed that his senses had come alive and had increased ten fold, the pumping adrenalin and crippling fear had made sure of that.

“You get four minutes, four. Run fast and keep running. You really don’t want what is behind you to find and catch you!”

The speaker spat directly into the captive’s face.

“That’s for your disrespect. You were treated like a son. It’s now up to you, bastard.”

The torch on his head was illuminated and the switch snapped off before the straps holding his arms were cut.

“Go!” they all screamed, the echo reverberating within the confined, black space.

After a brief pause, his heart racing and his pulse thumping in his ears, he started his slippery run, arms pumping, and eyes wide, into the chasm, into the unknown. Mud oozed between his toes as he moved over the parallel indentations running across the floor, making movement difficult. He just had to get away, he had to escape. He was unaware that an unknown, unsympathetic pair of eyes would briefly watch his progress.

“Run you little shit, run!” they all called, striking in him more fear and uncertainty of what was to come. Their sounds of laughter boomed as they bounced off the stonework

“Get them ready!”

Drew Sadler pushed himself as flat against the wall as possible, his breath instinctively held. Sweat now beaded his face as the heavy breathing and whimpering of the desperate youth grew louder as he approached. The cavernous space amplified the sounds that accompanied the naked figure running and stumbling past. Light beams danced on his back but it would be the next moment, the next split second that would bring the sudden and unexpected terror into Drew’s private world.

Review:

I’m so pleased to be the stop for the blog tour for Death and the Good Son today! I had such fun reading this one, which is not a word I would usually choose to describe my reading experience when I’m engrossed in a mystery/thriller. However, there was such an endearing quality to this book that really added so much depth and substance to the story that fun is exactly how I have to explain my time with this book.

This is the second book in a series but I didn’t read the first one but I’m regretting that now. It read perfectly well on it’s own though, any pertinent backstory was explained to my satisfaction and I didn’t experience any confusion at all. DI Hellier is the protagonist here and I really warmed to him. He’s sharp, fast on his feet and a quick thinker, all good qualities for a competent DI. The rest of the team was compromised of Sally, Lizzie, Adam, Ben and Bill. All of them have a great sense of camaraderie and are willing to go the extra mile to solve a case. Thank god for that, because they have their work cut out for them when they’re tasked with solving two cases simultaneously. First, two skeletons are found in a bog but they’re missing their heads and hands. Doesn’t get much creepier than that. Meanwhile, a local teenager dies after taking a bad batch of drugs and the team must work quickly to get the dealer off their streets.

Some of my favorite scenes were when Dan and Sally were working the cases together. They have an amazing rapport and they gave me a good laugh when they ribbed each other. Young Adam, the newbie to the team also added some lighthearted moments when he was rather eager to impress his superiors. I so appreciate when authors add humor and warmth to crime novels, it’s such a nice touch and it really breaks things up. There was a perfect balance between Dan’s personal and professional life which really allows the reader to connect with him on a deeper level.

Crime fiction fans looking for a new series have no need to look further, this is an excellent book to lose yourself in. This took quite a few surprising turns and there were some great action scenes that got my heart beating faster. I’ll be anxiously waiting for the next book in the series and I may even try and squeeze the first book into my TBR at some point.

Overall rating: 4/5

Thanks to Bloodhound Books for my review copy.

About the Author:

Bernie Steadman taught Literature for many years, and completed her debut crime novel, Death and Deception, when she finally escaped the classroom, and could stop marking essays.
These days she writes, walks, bends a bit in yoga and sings a bit in a choir. The emphasis is firmly on the creative, although people who have been subjected to her attempts at knitting may feel she has strayed from the path somewhat.
Her innate leaning towards the world of crime, at least in the literary sense, made it her chosen genre when she sat down to write. She plans further novels involving DI Dan Hellier and his team, and has completed a first draft of a YA thriller, By Fire and By Water, which should be published next year.

Bio:

Julie Archer grew up in Hampshire and lived in Reading before moving to the beautiful riverside town of Dartmouth in Devon. She still feels like she’s on holiday.

Julie trained as a journalist, then went into teaching (kept meeting the sixth form students in the pub, awkward!). After that she ‘fell’ into recruitment, spending more years there than she cares to mention, where the most creative thing she did was to create a sexy top line for job adverts! Since moving to Devon, she set up her own business offering virtual administration and recruitment services, worked for an accommodation company and is currently moonlighting in the local bookshop…

Also, COYS, Cats, Metal. Underneath this preppy exterior beats the heart of a rock chick.

Excerpt

“Edie Spencer-Newman shuddered as she sipped on her glass of slightly-too-warm Chardonnay. It had been years since she had drunk anything quite so distasteful, but The Vegas wasn’t exactly a venue renowned for its wine list. The beer-and-shots bar definitely wasn’t high on her list of venues to frequent. But when Alik had suggested that she see him play live, she hadn’t exactly been able to say no. So far into their relationship she had managed to avoid places like this, making sure that she took Alik to dinner or met him in a wine bar she felt comfortable in, or inviting him to parties at friends’ houses. She was eternally grateful that she had managed to persuade the team at Pretty Rich Things not to film her that evening. This definitely wasn’t the way she wanted her glamorous life to be portrayed. The reality TV programme followed a cluster of both self-made and inherited wealthy young men and women who were trying to make their own way in the business world. In Edie’s case, this was the opening of her own designer boutique, The Magpie. The little vintage boudoir-inspired shop had taken up a great deal of her time, as she sourced the chicest, most feminine, and, most of all, most expensive items that would appeal to her target market. Despite being pretty lazy when it came to work, she had thoroughly enjoyed scouring the internet and visiting suppliers to source the products and garments that would create the exclusive theme of the shop. Hanging out in seedy rock bars was not something that would resonate with her fans.

She looked around – taking in the clientele – seeing mostly leather and tattoos, and held her Prada clutch more tightly. Not a designer label in sight, except for her Pucci-inspired print shift dress, which still made her stand out from the crowd despite it being one of the more subdued garments in her extensive wardrobe. However, it was a wardrobe that wasn’t built for the rock scene. Perched uneasily on a bar stool, Edie wondered how much longer she would have to wait. Alik had just texted her to say he was backstage, which hopefully meant they would be starting soon.

“Hey, you didn’t tell me you were coming tonight.”

Like a beacon of light, Olivia Cole appeared beside her. She had been helping Edie with the PR for The Magpie and had become a firm friend over the last few months. Olivia’s work had been amazing, already creating a buzz about the place, and anticipation was high.

Edie smiled. “Alik invited me, but I’m not sure this place is for me.” She noticed Olivia was dressed similarly to her and was comforted by that fact. After all, Olivia was definitely more PR than rock, even though she would be working with Alik and the band. A couple of women walked past, heading towards the mosh pit close to the stage, clad head to toe in black, with matching pierced noses and heavily-studded ears. They cast a suspicious glance in Edie’s direction.

“The lead singer is my boyfriend,” Edie said, making sure they heard her.

One of them laughed. “Yeah, whatever, as if Alik Thorne would look at someone like you. I reckon he’ll be seeing more of me later.”

Edie watched in horror as the two women headed off towards the front. There was a flurry of activity as they heard a couple of guitars being tuned up

Olivia grabbed Edie’s arm and pulled her closer towards the stage. “You’ll be fine, their bark is usually worse than their bite.”

All of a sudden, there was noise, in Edie’s opinion anyway, and Alik appeared on the stage, bathed in a single spotlight.

“Good evening Vegas!” he roared. Edie thought it sounded as if he was pretending to play Las Vegas rather than North Ridge. “Thanks for coming down tonight. This is ‘In It For The Craic’.” She watched as he whirled across the stage, microphone in hand, with the guitar, bass, and drums crashing around him.

As the set progressed, Edie started to enjoy herself. Despite the fact that the music was so far away from being her sort of thing, she couldn’t help but be enthralled by Alik and how he could hold the audience in the palm of his hand. She hadn’t really known how talented he was, not to mention how popular the band were. She realised she would probably have to fend off all sorts of female attention for her man.”

Blog Tour/Guest Post: The Hidden Island by @angelaWcorner @Bloodhoundbook

I’m delighted to be a stop on the tour for Hidden Island by Angela Corner today! Read on for more information about the book and a fabulous guest post from the author.

About the book:

Sex. Drugs. Murder.

Hidden behind the crystal seas and beautiful beaches of a Greek Island dark and dangerous secrets lurk. Beckett has had his fill of adrenaline fuelled criminal investigation and with a broken body and damaged career goes to the Greek Island of Farou to head up the Criminal Investigation Bureau. Serious crime is rare, the weather is great and the beer is cold but his ‘retirement’ is cut short when a pagan cult resurrects and bodies start showing up.

With doubts about his mental and physical ability to do the job, a British police detective is sent to help with the investigation. DI Lee Harper is everything Beckett is not – young, ambitious and by the book.

As well as tackling the new case Beckett must overcome the demons from his past.

Family loyalty, power and money are at the source of the investigation where appearance is everything and nothing is what is seems.

Can Beckett and Harper work together to find justice for the victims?
Will the idyllic island ever be the same again?

Sometimes paradise can be hell.

Guest Post:

Scriptwriting v novel writing

The Hidden Island is my first venture into novel writing – apart from a Hollyoaks spin off novel I did a few years ago – but I spent nearly ten years writing scripts for soap operas, Hollyoaks mainly and a handful for Eastenders.

So how different is it writing for television and writing a novel?

Scriptwriting for a long running series obviously gives you less creative freedom and input than writing a novel. You are writing about pre-existing characters, their back stories already invented, and sending them down story avenues that you and perhaps twenty other writers have discussed, argued about and eventually agreed over (or not as the case maybe). You can be asked to write about characters you don’t enjoy writing for and to make characters do things you don’t think they would do. But also when you’ve worked on a TV show for a few years there will be characters you have created yourself and storylines that you gave birth to that you and the other writers have developed and breathed life into over many months. There is a huge sense of satisfaction at seeing your ideas explode onto the TV screen as well as frustration if the team decides the story should go in a different direction to the one you intended. There are also practical restrictions when writing for most TV series. You might want to send ten characters on holiday to Barbados for an adventure but finances will only allow you three characters (many actors are only paid per the number of episodes they appear in) on a day trip to Rhyl and they might not be the three characters you want to write about because of actor’s holidays. You also have to contend with censorship – particularly on a pre-watershed show – many words and acts are out of bounds, and the interpretation of the director and the actors. Every TV show is the result of a massive team of people, not always with the same vision as the writer.

Writing a novel could not be more different. You have total freedom. There are no budget restrictions. Your characters can live and travel anywhere. You can have a cast of thousands – not necessarily a good idea unless you are incredibly good at planning and organising and want to write a 500 pager. You are playing god with a world entirely of your own creation. But this freedom is incredibly scary. Every story needs its own rules and boundaries to make sense. Writing on a TV show means you have other writers to consult, other episodes to fit in around, script editors giving their input every couple of weeks, producers giving notes and asking for changes, and immovable deadlines that you have to hit. Writing for a TV show is a team sport. Writing a novel is like a solo voyage around the world. Exciting, scary, full of potential disasters but incredibly rewarding when you get to the end. Writing on a TV show there isn’t ever an end, though your part in it might finish, there is always someone else to carry it on. It can never be solely yours whereas a novel is the writer’s child. For good and for bad.
