Goodreads|Amazon US|Amazon UK
Release date: October 14, 2016

Publisher: Silverwhite Press

Genre: Mystery/Psychological Thriller

Goodreads blurb:

A serial killer who wants to quit. A detective struggling to keep his personal life out of a murder hunt. And a celebrity psychiatrist facing an incredible challenge. Three damaged individuals, linked by their traumatic histories. They’ve chosen very different paths. Now those paths are about to cross.

Sarah Silver is a hedge fund manager – from Monday to Friday she makes a killing in the markets. At weekends, though, she hunts men, not profits. Martin White used to be a brilliant detective. But his family, judgement and self-control are deserting him. And Karl Gross has sold millions of books on serial killers. However he’s a controversial figure in the medical community.

Can Martin keep it together and catch a killer who commits almost perfect crimes? Is Karl capable of unravelling Sarah’s psyche and putting an end to the killing? Or will she disappear when she realises that the hunter has become the hunted?

PsychoAnalysis is a psychological crime thriller that explores the grey area between good and evil. Why would a woman kill for fun? Can she be understood? Can she be stopped?

“The mind is like an iceberg. Most of it lies beneath the surface, a subconscious universe of thoughts we can’t observe. It contains memories too painful to remember, elicits emotions we don’t want to feel, and makes us do things we don’t understand.”

There’s also a trailer for the book with additional information.

Review:

Oh man you guys this was quite the creepy and disturbing read, absolutely perfect to read during the month of Halloween, great for a Halloween Readathon as well. I’ve always had an interest in female serial killers as they’re such a rarity so I was totally intrigued by Sarah and she did not disappoint in the scary, cold, and absolutely depraved serial killer department.

There are three point of views here, Sarah  who hunts pretty boys and kills them for fun, Martin, a DI whose personal life is in shambles and his professional life isn’t fairing much better, and finally Karl a psychiatrist who has made a living by selling sensationalized books about serial killers. All three are utterly absorbing and I found myself completely caught up in their various stories. Sarah obviously has a huge secret that she’s managed to keep quiet for years, but both Martin and Karl have skeletons in their closets as well.

Though this isn’t a traditional mystery where the reader is trying to figure out who the murderer is, there is still a strong level of tension as you’re left wondering if Sarah will be caught. Will she be able to control her sadistic urges long enough to get help and quit playing her deadly games once and for all? I really enjoyed the way Stone was able to build up suspense and his writing style was polished and effortless, he maintained a nice pace and flow throughout the book. For a debut novelist he really knows how to hook the reader and keep their attention.

I was reminded of two of my favorite characters while reading this; Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell from Chelsea Cain’s popular series featuring the two. Stone created a depraved and detached killer in Sarah and there are definitely some violent and graphic scenes, not for the faint of heart. Her level of intelligence and cunning is far superior to most and though she’s a sick and twisted individual, I was beyond curious about exploring her psyche.

I was throughly impressed by this book and I will definitely be following Stone’s writing career closely. The characters are well rounded with complex personalities and issues, the writing itself is excellent, and the story Stone told was engrossing. He was able to weave together the lives of the characters seamlessly while providing a tight narrative with plenty of well executed and surprising plot twists. Highly recommended for crime fiction fans.

Overall rating: 4/5

Thanks to the author for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author:

V.R. Stone loves crime stories – The Silence of The Lambs, The Sopranos, American Psycho, Pulp Fiction, Shutter Island – movies, TV shows and books featuring cynical cops, femmes fatale, gangsters and serial killers. Thrills, twists and violence – that’s what he craves. Give him a well-crafted tale featuring compelling characters on the wrong side of the law and he’ll be a happy man.

He really does have an unhealthy fascination with people getting shot, stabbed and strangled. But he doesn’t have the guts to set up a protection racket in his leafy London suburb, rob a bank or follow you home at night. So he sits alone in a room making up stories.

When he’s not busy with that, he works in the City of London and spends time with his very patient wife and very impatient children.

Blog Tour/Excerpt: Bury the Living by Jodi McIssac

 About the Book:

On the 100th anniversary of Ireland’s Easter Rising, join the adventures of one woman who might just change Irish history as we know it
Bury the Living
By Jodi McIsaac

“McIsaac puts plenty of history and a little fantasy and romance into this entertaining time travel tale. McIsaac has an undeniable talent for immersing the reader in the plight of the Irish in the 1920s, at the height of the Irish Civil War. Comparisons to Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series are inevitable…”

—Publishers Weekly

Contemporary fantasy author Jodi McIsaac returns to shelves with her newest historical fiction novel, a poignant time travel tale that will take fans back to Ireland in 1923 in BURY THE LIVING

Rebellion has always been in the O’Reilly family’s blood. So when faced with the tragic death of her brother during Northern Ireland’s infamous Troubles, a teenage Nora joined the IRA to fight for her country’s freedom. Now, over a decade later, Nora is haunted by both her past and intense dreams of a man she has never met.
When she is given a relic belonging to Brigid of Kildare, patron saint of Ireland, the mystical artifact transports her back to 1923—to the height of Ireland’s brutal civil war in. There she meets the fascinating stranger from her dreams, who has his own secrets—and an agenda. Ripped from her own time, Nora now has the chance to save the ones she loves… and to alter the entire future of Ireland.

Excerpt from Bury the Living:

“Is there something wrong with you?” Nora said angrily. “All I asked was for you to help me identify this man, and now you’re messing me around with talk of time travel? I’m not an eejit.”
Mary closed her eyes. “I feared you might react this way. What sane person wouldn’t? But then I thought perhaps Brigid had appeared to you as well.”
“No. It wasn’t Brigid who told me to come here; it was Thomas, whoever the hell he is. I can guarantee you no saint has ever communicated with me, no matter how faithful I’ve been.”
“I can’t make you believe. But everything I’ve told you is true, no matter how it sounds. Just . . . try doing what she asks. If it doesn’t work, you can leave. But we’re all here for a reason, Nora. This was mine: to pass on this message to you. Don’t you want to find out what your reason is?”
Nora held Mary’s gaze for a heartbeat, then looked down at the relic in her hand. What was her reason for being in this world? For a while she’d thought it was to avenge her brother and help free Northern Ireland. And then she’d believed it was to relieve the suffering of others. But could there be something else?
“Fine, I’ll humor you. How does it work, then?” she asked.
“I don’t know exactly how it works, only that Brigid has power beyond our understanding. Her message was simple. Take the relic, which will give you the ability to travel back in time. Then you must find one of the Brigidine Sisters. You are to tell them that Brigid sent you and you are the bane of Aengus Óg.”
“The bane of Aengus Óg? What the hell does that mean?” She wanted answers, but there were only more riddles.
Mary shook her head. “I’m only the messenger. Aengus Óg was one of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the old gods of Ireland. Perhaps Brigid sends you to triumph over paganism.”
“I doubt it. I’m not that holy,” Nora muttered.
“She knew you would be reluctant. There aren’t many people who are willing to risk themselves to help a complete stranger.”
“I’ve spent the last several years of my life helping complete strangers,” Nora pointed out.
“She also said that if you succeed in helping Thomas, you might be able to help others who are close to you.”
Nora took a step back, her eyes narrowed. “What do you mean? Who?”
“I don’t know. Are any of your friends or relatives in trouble? Anyone close to you who needs help?”
There’s no one close to me at all.
And that sealed it. What did she have to lose? If it worked—she couldn’t believe she was even considering this as a possibility—no one would miss her. No one would even know she was gone. Besides, she already had so many regrets in life. If she didn’t even try, perhaps she would regret this, too. I couldn’t help Eamon. Maybe I can do something for this Thomas.
“Brigid has chosen you,” Mary continued when Nora didn’t answer. “You only need to put your trust in her. She offers you a great gift.”
“This is mad.” Nora took a deep breath and stared at the box in her hand. “What am I supposed to do?”
“Hold the relic in your palm. Think hard about Thomas. Ask Brigid to guide you to him. And have faith.”
Fingers shaking slightly, Nora picked up the bone and closed her eyes. Christ, have mercy. She pictured Thomas as clearly as she could— not the man frozen in the picture but the man from her dream, sitting on the stone wall, speaking with her in his soft voice, pleading for her to come find him. I’m trying. Where are you?
Then she felt an overwhelming dizziness. She was falling, but when she tried to open her eyes, she couldn’t quite remember how. She threw out her arms to break the fall, and then there was darkness.

Saturday Shoutout: Q & A with author Brad Graber @Jefbra1 @McKinneyPR

I’m so excited to share a Q & A with Brad Graber today! He’s a local author and I was so pleased to be put in touch with him as I haven’t had the chance to support any local authors yet. His debut novel, The Intersect is available now. I’ll be reviewing the book soon and I’m so interested in reading something based in my home state of Arizona as that doesn’t happen too often. Read on for more information on the book as well as an interview with Brad.

About the Book:

THE INTERSECT by Brad Graber

Brad Graber was thrilled to move to Phoenix in 2009, a friendly city with a diverse community. But the state of Arizona had its struggles, especially regarding immigration. The rich culture of Phoenix, set against the political and social issues of Arizona in 2010, is the backdrop to Graber’s charismatic debut The Intersect.

In THE INTERSECT, Graber uses his personal history, professional health care background, and the social issues of today, to paint a moving portrait of lives that connect in a deep and meaningful way. The novel weaves together the stories of disparate characters who are striving to survive in a world where the most lasting connection is made among strangers. Graber takes a close look at what it’s like to be an older woman struggling to navigate the health care system while being swindled by her family; a gay man in a long term relationship thrown off-balance by early retirement; an illegal immigrant who considers himself to be an American, in a country that tells him otherwise; and a gay teen who has come out of the closet to a rejecting family.

THE INTERSECT opens with Daisy, a spry 75-year-old woman living on her own. When Daisy gets into a car accident and is whisked away for hip surgery, her stay in rehab threatens to transition to long-term care. Her nephew Jack and his second wife Enid nefariously garner power of attorney and, without Daisy’s knowledge, sell her Biltmore home. Months later, Daisy returns to discover that a gay couple in their 50s, Dave and Charlie, have purchased the property. Charlie welcomes Daisy into the couple’s guestroom, believing she’s Dave’s distant aunt from NYC, before discovering her circumstance. The men bond with Daisy, even as Dave and Charlie’s relationship starts to take a turn when Dave quits his high-end career and spirals into a post midlife crisis.

Meanwhile, Ernie is a Mexican-born immigrant who was smuggled into the United States when he was a young child. He owns a handyman business and prides himself on being a model American, despite his illegal status. When Ernie stops by the house of a client, he finds the woman held at knifepoint in an attempted robbery. When the police arrive, Ernie is falsely arrested and deported to Mexico, where his American grit helps him to succeed despite overwhelming odds.

These characters’ stories become intertwined with those of a psychic, a physical therapist, and scheming love interests as the novel takes many dramatic twists. Lives become entangled: relationships are strained, secrets are revealed, personal identities are threatened, hearts are broken, and justice is sought.

Exploring today’s hot-button issues of immigration, elder abuse, and teen homelessness, THE INTERSECT shows readers that strangers can make unexpected and lasting connections—even as they reveal the most vulnerable part of themselves.

Q & A:

1. What’s a typical writing day for you look like? Describe your perfect writing environment.

I tend to get up early, about 5 a.m., and walk the dog. After I eat breakfast and read the paper, I settle down into my home office where I start writing about 7:30 a.m. – after checking email and watching Charlie Rose on CBS. I break about ten o’clock – for a snack – and to let the dog out. My dog Charlie, tends to be huddled nearby. He moves around a lot, starting out in his dog bed – and then shifting to the sofa behind me in my office. I know things are going well if he I can hear him snoring. At noon, I break for lunch – and then continue working till 2 pm – and then I head off to the gym.

2. How did you get started writing? Was it something that you’ve always loved?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but my career as a healthcare administrator was very distracting. There were times in my life when I tried to write a novel, but I was either unable to concentrate or too tired because of the commitment to my daytime job. But, I always loved great writing, and have been inspired when I’ve read something especially compelling.

3. Who are your favorite writers/inspirations?

I like to read a wide variety of authors. I love historical fiction, like Ken Follett’s Winter of the World and Ayn Rand’s We the Living. I enjoy biography, especially Doris Kearns Goodwin’s No Ordinary Time. I like page turners, like Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code. And I enjoy a fun read like Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin.

4. Anything you can tell us about upcoming projects?

I’m currently working on my second novel, The Season of the Caterpillar, which is the story of a teen being raised by her grandmother, and the teen goes on a journey in search of her namesake. I’m hoping to have that book completed in 2017.

5. Normally, how do you develop plots/characters? Brief us on your process.

I tend to write about the issues that profoundly grab my attention. We all have life experiences, and I dig through that mental file folder with the intent of exploring those challenges more fully. My characters are not real people – they’re all fictional – and so the plot must be driven by their behavior, thoughts, and actions – which I imagine when they come to life. If you have a real sense of your characters, you know how they will behave. That is always helpful.

6. Favorite character from one of your own novels?

My favorite character would have to be Daisy from The Intersect. She’s immensely kind, but has a life story that makes her unique and interesting. And being a mature women in her seventies, she offers wisdom which can only come through life experience. I love that about her.

7. Preferred methods for readers to contact you?

I’m available by email at brad@bradgraber.com. And I’m also always looking for opportunities to connect with readers by visiting book clubs. So happy to do that.

8. On average, how long does it take you to write a book?

It took three years to complete The Intersect. But I’m hoping the next book is completed in under two years (fingers crossed).

9. Which one of your characters do you relate to the most?

There really isn’t one. I’ve inhabited each one of them through the writing process. That helps to make them seem real.

10. If writing wasn’t your career, what would you be doing?

I’d be working with a non-profit organization. As a former healthcare administrator, that was a big portion of my life.

11. What’s the best compliment that you’ve received about your work?

I’ve been told it’s an easy, engaging read – a real page turner – that people have trouble putting it down. It makes me smile to know that I’ve been able to capture my reader’s attention and pique their curiosity.

Thanks so much to Brad for joining me today and thanks to Larissa Ackerman from Claire McKinney PR for putting us in touch.

Audiobook Review: 113 Minutes by James Patterson and Max Dilallo @hachetteaudio

Goodreads|Amazon|Author Website

Release date: September 6, 2016

Publisher: Hachette Audio

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Narrators: Becky Ann Baker and Christopher Ryan Grant

Goodreads blurb:

I know who killed my son. Molly Rourke’s son has been murdered … and she knows who’s responsible. Now she’s taking the law into her own hands. Never underestimate a mother’s love.

Review:

That blurb is sure short, sweet and cuts right to the chase! Even though it’s brief it sure caught my eye. A mother avenging her sons death is both heartbreaking and gripping and I was curious as to how this would play out, especially as this is one of Patterson’s Bookshots, which is like a novella meant to be read in one sitting in a few hours. This was my first time listening to a Bookshot and man am I ever hooked!

Molly Rourke is a woman on a mission. Someone sold her son, Alex crystal meth that killed him. He was only fifteen and Molly’s whole world. The only way she can cope is by making a plan. She wants revenge and she will stop at nothing to ensure the men who had a hand in Alex’s death are brought to justice.

Both the narrators for this are fantastic. Molly is voiced by Becky Ann Baker and Christopher Ryan Grant narrates from the perspective of the FBI agent who is in charge of apprehending Molly and her brothers as they set off on a crime spree the likes of which he’s never seen before. The story is set in West Texas and both had awesome accents that made you feel like you were standing next to them under a blazing Texas sun.

This was perfect to read/listen to in one afternoon and I was really caught up in what the outcome would be. Listening time is just shy of three hours, a nice bite sized read. The twist in this one threw me for a loop, I was honestly not expecting that from such a brief story! This book was fun, flew along at warp speed and still managed to blindside me, so pack it in your bag on your next vacation.

Overall rating: 4/5

Review: Dark Water by Robert Bryndza

Goodreads|Amazon|Author Website
Release date: October 20, 2016

Publisher: Bookouture

Genre: Crime Fiction/Mystery/Thriller

Goodreads blurb:

Beneath the water the body sank rapidly. She would lie still and undisturbed for many years but above her on dry land, the nightmare was just beginning.

When Detective Erika Foster receives a tip-off that key evidence for a major narcotics case was stashed in a disused quarry on the outskirts of London, she orders for it to be searched. From the thick sludge the drugs are recovered, but so is the skeleton of a young child.

The remains are quickly identified as seven-year-old Jessica Collins. The missing girl who made headline news twenty-six years ago.

As Erika tries to piece together new evidence with the old, she must dig deeper and find out more about the fractured Collins family and the original detective, Amanda Baker. A woman plagued by her failure to find Jessica. Erika soon realises this is going to be one of the most complex and demanding cases she has ever taken on.

Is the suspect someone close to home? Someone is keeping secrets. Someone who doesn’t want this case solved. And they’ll do anything to stop Erika from finding the truth.

From the million-copy bestselling author of The Girl in the Ice and The Night Stalker, comes the third heart-stopping book in the Detective Erika Foster series.

Review:

I have to start by saying that for everyone that has been anxiously awaiting the newest book in Bryndza’s Detective Erika Foster series, the wait has been well worth it. He’s done it again folks, this one has everything fans crave and more. The only question that I have now is, when is book four coming? Fingers crossed for early 2017!

Jessica Collins disappeared twenty six years ago when she was just seven years old. My daughter is the same age and imagining what her poor parents went through when she went missing broke my heart. And then to still not have any answers all these years later? Unfathomable. But now DCI Foster has fought to lead the investigation and she is tenacious and determined to finally solve Jessica’s case and bring some peace to her family.

This case is beyond cold, and with very little in the way of leads, Foster has her work cut out for her. It’s soon apparent that someone is trying to thwart the investigation at any cost. But who could this person possibly be? And why are they willing to take such extreme measures to ensure that old secrets stay buried? Trust me when I say that these measures are extreme and chilling.

Jessica’s family was completely shattered by her disappearance. Her mother is barely hanging on by a thread, her father is oblivious, her older sister is skittish and fragile, and her younger brother barely remembers Jessica and is the sole member of the family who has remained relatively unscathed. Someone is playing a deadly game with the Collins family and DCI Foster and the clock is ticking.

This book had a slow and simmering burn feeling to it although the chapters are brief and the pacing is spot on. Part of why I love crime fiction is that you get a behind the scenes look as to how police officers begin to untangle a case, and this one is a whopper. Seeing Erika interact with both parts of her old team and new members was a treat and I liked seeing her next to her family as well. It showed a different side to her other than her work personality which is often bristly, abrasive and sometimes downright bitchy.

The twists here are well thought out and there are plenty diversionary tactics used to keep the reader on their toes. When all was revealed, I was totally gut punched. The truth is heartbreaking and emotional in a way that knocked me off of my feet. In many ways this was a senseless tragedy that managed to change and effect the lives of so many people. I must stop there before I go and reveal major plot points, but this one was a winner and  one that I feel will stay with me for quite some time.

Overall rating: 5/5

Thanks to Bookouture for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Blog Tour/Guest Post: Shutter by Laurie Faria Stolarz

I’m so excited to be a stop for the blog tour for Shuttered by Laurie Faria Stolarz. Read on for info on the book and a fabulous guest post from Laurie.

ABOUT SHUTTER:

THE FACTS

• Julian Roman, age sixteen, is an escapee from the Fairmount County Juvenile Detention Facility.

• His parents, Michael Roman and Jennifer Roman, are dead.

• Julian is wanted for murder.
THE QUESTIONS

• Why is Julian Roman on the run?

• Just how dangerous is he?

• And who did kill Michael and Jennifer Roman, if not Julian?
Seventeen-year-old Day Baker views life through the lens of her camera, where perspective is everything. But photographs never tell the whole story. After Day crosses paths with Julian, the world she pictures and the truths she believes-neatly captured in black and white-begin to blur.
Julian is not the “armed and dangerous” escapee the police are searching for, but his alibis don’t quite add up, either. There is more to his story. This time, Day is determined to see the entire picture . . . whatever it reveals. Did he? Or didn’t he?
Day digs deeper into the case while Julian remains on the run. But the longer her list of facts becomes, the longer the list of questions becomes, too. It’s also getting harder to deny the chemistry she feels for him. Is it real? Or is she being manipulated?
Day is close to finding the crack in the case. She just needs time to focus before the shutter snaps shut.

10 things I didn’t know about being an author before I became one

1. I didn’t know how much of a good investment high quality coffee would be.

2. I knew that writing could be isolating, but I didn’t know the value and importance of connecting with other writers both in-person and online. Attend conferences, teach workshops, go on writing retreats, organize panels at bookstores, schedule meet-ups to work or talk shop, etc., etc.

3. I didn’t know how much of a pen snob I’d become. Writers need to invest in high-quality pens and notebooks (and keep them handy at all times). It makes a big difference when scribbling down ideas or working through plot.

4. I didn’t know how much my work would mean to certain readers. Over the years I’ve had readers tell me my work has gotten them to love reading, saved their lives, changed their philosophical and religious views, helped them escape, inspired them to write, given them hope, taught them about courage, and helped them face their biggest fears.

5. I didn’t know that coffee shops could provide some of the best office space.

6. I didn’t know what an impact I could make as an author. After I had a couple of books published, I started making periodic visits to an all girls’ residential treatment facility to talk about my work, writing, and perseverance. On one of my visits, I hit huge traffic and arrived thirty minutes late (and I’m never late for anything, so it was super stressful). When I finally got there, a girl was in tears simply because she didn’t think I’d come and I actually did. She was so used to being disappointed in life, she cried to think I’d actually pull through.

7. I didn’t know that sometimes the best writing happens away from the computer. I’m frequently thinking of character and plot throughout my day, which is why keeping that notebook and pen handy is essential.

8. I didn’t know how beneficial it was to get away from the screen to get inspired. Sometimes when you sit down at the computer, the words just aren’t there. Taking walks, exercising, being active in the community, getting out with others, teaching, learning, experiencing…it’s all essential for writing.

9. I didn’t know how much the industry would change – the birth of e-Readers and book blogs, the death of Borders. There are now more online opportunities for marketing, but less shelf space at stores to carry titles. There are more opportunities for people to be published, but less certainty as to where publishing houses and authors will get the biggest bang for their marketing/advertising buck.

10. I didn’t know how grateful I’d be for my marketing degree.

Inaccurate Book Covers

Those books that have nothing to do with the story, or the cover model doesn’t look anything like the actual main character, or it’s a really cheesy cover for a great read!

I’m putting my own spin on this one and I’ve been Googling the worst book covers of all time for the past hour or so and I found some god awful, but hilarious ones. I must share the top five most horrifying with you my friends. Please don’t think I’ve read any of these because I would never! I also mean no offense to the authors, you may have written a lovely book, but these cover/title combos are just bad.

Any book with penis in the title is guaranteed to make me giggle. Yes, I’m super mature. This is supposedly humorous but the only thing I’m laughing at is that God awful cover. Granted, it was published in 1997 but still…

Umm…well…yeah….this one was clearly published in the 80’s. That’s really all I’ve got. At least it didn’t say gnarly instead of awesome? (Do you see the author of title at the bottom? 😂)

You guys, this is dinosaur erotica. I can’t stop laughing. Because if I don’t laugh I’ll cry thinking about dinosaur erotica!!!

Me too Joel, me too.

Now I’ll never sleep again. You’re welcome.

Do you have any hilariously bad book covers to share? This was highly amusing to me, I would love to see more! I had to stop looking them up, there were so many bad ones. 😳🙈😱

Review: To Love and To Cherish by Lauren Layne

Goodreads|Amazon|Author Website
Release date: October 18, 2016

Publisher: Pocket Books

Genre: Contemporary Romance/Chick Lit

Goodreads blurb:

Sex and the City meets The Wedding Planner in The Wedding Belles, a contemporary and witty romance series about three high-powered New York City women who can plan any wedding—but their own.

Alexis Morgan has spent the past six years devoted to turning her tiny start-up into Manhattan’s premiere wedding planning company, The Wedding Belles. Now that her business is thriving, it’s time to turn towards her much neglected personal life, and Alexis approaches her relationships like she does everything else: with a plan. Not a part of that plan is Logan Harris, the silent partner in the Belles, and the one person who’s been there for her since the very beginning. But Alexis needs someone fun, and Logan’s all business, all the time—except when a late night at the office ends with an unexpected kiss that leaves the usually cool and together Alexis reeling.

Logan has lusted after Alexis since the day he walked into the tiny Harlem apartment that used to double as her office. But the ambitious wedding planner has always been untouchable…until now. Alexis has made it clear that she’s on the dating market—and equally clear that he’s not in the running. But when Alexis finds herself in need of a date for her sister’s last minute wedding in Florida, Logan knows it’s the perfect time to show Alexis that there’s more to him than numbers and spreadsheets—and beneath the pinstripes and glasses lies a hot-blooded heartthrob. As Florida’s sultry days turn into even hotter nights, Logan’s out to convince Alexis that the fling of a lifetime could just maybe turn into forever…

Review:

I was highly anticipating the third book in the Wedding Belles series as I loved the previous two. To Have and To Hold and For Better Or Worse were both really fun and romantic reads where you were introduced to a group of friends and coworkers living in NYC. While I wasn’t exactly disappointed by To Love and To Cherish, I wasn’t as content as I thought I would be.

Book three finally delves into Alexis story and I had been waiting for this for some time. Behind her icy exterior I just knew that there was an interesting story there. Everyone but her has been very aware that the Belle’s accountant, Logan is in love with her and has been for years. Eight years as a matter of fact. The man has the patience of a saint. So seeing the light finally go off in Alexis head was gratifying but not unexpected. Along the way you find out exactly how she started the Belle’s which is something I’ve always been curious about too.

Alexis and Logan have great chemistry and Layne delivers her usual charm and sexy scenes that she’s known for. What was missing for me in this book was the banter that she usually nails. I guess it was sort of there, I just felt it was better and snarkier in the second book between Heather and Josh. There is plenty of flirting and sexual tension between Alexis and Logan and he is utterly charming and sophisticated. If anyone is able to discover Alexis hidden soft and sexy side it’s him.

I loved revisiting this group of friends and checking in with Jessie, Seth, Brooke, Josh and Heather. I’m sad that this is the last book in the series, I was hoping for a fourth book about Jessie. While book two was definitely my favorite, I can still recommend this one as well. In fact, I can wholeheartedly stand behind this entire series as they have everything I look for in a good chick lit series; warmth, humor, fun, sex, and wit.

Overall rating: 3.5/5

Thanks to Pocket Books for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Glynis Astie

Bio:

Glynis never expected in her wildest dreams to be a writer. After thirteen years in the Human Resources Industry, she decided to stay at home with her two amazing sons. Ever in search of a project, she was inspired to write the story of how, in only six short months, she met and married her wonderfully romantic French husband, Sebastien. The end result became her first novel, French Twist. As this was just the beginning of their epic love story, Glynis continued to chronicle their adventures in the sequel, French Toast, and the final installment in the series, French Fry. After she finished milking her life story for all it was worth, she decided to write straight-up fiction with Gamer Girl, which infuses her beloved chick lit with a hint of fantasy.

When Glynis is not writing, she is trying to keep the peace amongst the three men and two cats in her life, finding missing body parts (Lego pieces are small!), supervising a myriad of homework assignments and keeping a tenuous hold on her sanity by consuming whatever chocolate is in the vicinity.

Gilmore Girls Gusto

The other day a friend posted this photo on my Facebook timeline and my first thought was how cool it would be to live your life channeling a little bit of each of these amazing characters from Gilmore Girls. (Okay, it wasn’t my first thought. My first thought was, “I have to buy this!” but close enough.) While I believe this mug captured memorable traits from each role, there were definitely a few essentials missing. Granted slapping this stuff on a mug requires brevity, but I’m a writer—and we tend to be wordy—so I thought I might share some of my own favorite things about this lovable cast.

Are you ready for the breakdown? Here we go!

Lorelai: I always had great appreciation for her wardrobe (nobody could rock high-heeled boots like her!), but she really captured my heart with her signature wit and her truly astounding ability to deliver an enormous amount of dialogue seemingly without drawing breath. She may have been impulsive and oh so impatient, but she balanced this nicely with her captivating smile and huge heart. Not to mention her capacity to put away copious amounts of junk food without any physical evidence. That being said, I want to dress, talk and eat like Lorelai.

Rory: Without a doubt the most well-read and smartest one on the list (she did beat out Paris for valedictorian after all), she also possessed the sweetest disposition known to man. Everyone—with the exception of Dean’s wife and an angry ballet dancer—loved Rory. She was also quite witty (inherited from her mother, natch), using her intellectual prowess to take her humor to a whole other level. If I had the chance, I would think, read and sparkle like Rory.

Emily: She clearly knew her way around a good cocktail, but she was also no slouch in the etiquette department. (Perhaps she felt the need to live up to good old Emily Post!) She may have been tough as nails, but she was graceful, determined and had amazing taste in jewelry. And that voice? So regal and imposing. I totally want to drink, take charge and enunciate like Emily.

Sookie: Though well known as the originator of the most delicious food in Stars Hollow and beyond (I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to reach through my TV to taste what she was making), it was her sunny demeanor that always stuck with me. From her infectious laugh to her hair-brained schemes, watching her on screen always made me smile. She was positively brimming with silliness, enthusiasm and love. If I could, I would love to cook, laugh and enthuse like Sookie.

Lane: The coolest chick around, she was adept at living a double life. Ever the dutiful daughter, she presented the perfect image to her domineering mother while she followed her love of rock, junk food and pop culture in private. She was dramatic, soulful and passionate about her music. It would be awesome to rock, feel and dream like Lane.

Paris: She was definitely no slouch in the dialogue department. Not only did she offer up some of the sauciest zingers ever written, she would make you cry with laughter from her deadpan delivery. She always overstepped, she gave an impeccable withering stare and she never took crap from anyone. She was, without a doubt, stark raving mad and absolutely hilarious. Given the opportunity, I would talk, stare and reduce people to puddles like Paris.

That does it for my take on these amazing Gilmore Girls personalities. Although, I do have one more thing for you. Here’s my take on a few other Stars Hollow favorites in convenient mug-sized descriptions. Enjoy!
