What Is the Seaside Café Series About?
Welcome to Charm, North Carolina, where Everly Swan has returned to her seaside hometown to open Sun, Sand, and Tea, an iced tea shop and café right on the beach. Unfortunately for Everly, murder seems to follow her almost as reliably as customers follow her specialty teas.
Across seven books, Everly finds herself investigating everything from poisoned tea and beachside weddings to Christmas murders, Hollywood actresses, haunted Halloween tours, surf competitions, and a mysterious family curse. Along the way, she becomes increasingly tangled up in the mysteries of Charm—and in her complicated relationship with handsome Detective Grady Hays.
The mysteries are always at the center, but what really makes the series work is the world Bree Baker builds around them. Charm feels like a real community, complete with quirky residents, family traditions, gossip, seasonal celebrations, local businesses, and plenty of personality.
And despite being set in a beach town, the series doesn’t rely solely on summer vibes. Baker leans into the seasons throughout the series, which was a huge win for me. You get beachy summer mysteries, a Christmas blizzard, Halloween festivities, and everything in between.
Can You Read These Books as Standalones?
Technically, yes—but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Each book has its own murder mystery, so you could pick one up and understand the basic case. But Everly’s personal life, relationship with Grady, friendships, family dynamics, and the larger story of Charm continue throughout the series.
Reading these in order makes the character development and ongoing storylines much more satisfying, especially once Everly and Grady’s relationship becomes a bigger part of the series.
My recommendation: Start with Live and Let Chai and enjoy the full seven book binge.

My Seaside Café Mysteries Ranking
7. A Call For Kelp — ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Still a thoroughly enjoyable installment, but the heavy focus on beekeeping wasn’t really my thing. The mystery was solid, as always, and by this point I was completely immersed in Charm and its residents, so even a slightly less favorite installment was still an easy four stars.
6. No Good Tea Goes Unpunished — ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A murder at a beachfront wedding? Sign me up. I love a wedding in a book, and this one delivered. Everly and Detective Hays were becoming increasingly intense at this point, and their banter was so good. The mystery was fun, the cast was appropriately quirky, and it was another very easy binge.
5. Partners in Lime — ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This one leaned especially hard into the beachy summer setting with surfing and summer events, which made Charm feel even more like a vacation destination. Things get seriously tense between Everly and Grady when she sets out to help her friend Matt, and I absolutely feared for their relationship. At the same time, I appreciated that Everly stayed true to herself and her friendships. Their relationship tension made this one especially compelling.
4. Closely Harbored Secrets — ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Halloween in a beach town? Yes, please.
I loved that Baker continued leaning into seasonal vibes even though the series is set in such a summery location. The Halloween setting, haunted walking tour, ghost stories, and buried treasure gave this one a particularly fun atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Grady has officially had enough of Everly’s meddling, which means plenty of push and pull between them. Their relationship tension was very entertaining.
3. Tide and Punishment — ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Christmas at the beach, a freak blizzard, and Everly trying to clear her aunt’s name? This one couldn’t have been more up my alley.
I especially loved getting more of Everly’s great aunts. They’re quirky, adorable, and their relationship with each other and with Everly adds so much heart to the series. The holiday atmosphere combined with a murder mystery and a rare coastal blizzard made this one of my favorites.
2. Pleading the Fish — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The perfect way to end the series.
Everly is preparing for her wedding to Grady when a murder threatens to derail everything, and the Swan family curse becomes even more important. I adored seeing all of the storylines come together as Everly’s life moves into this next chapter.
And those extra epilogues at the end? So cute. They added some really fun additional insight and made saying goodbye to Charm a little easier.
1. Live and Let Chai — ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
What an amazing start to the series.
I loved getting to know Everly, Charm, the residents, her family, and all of the potential love interests alongside her. I also gravitate toward culinary cozies, and I hadn’t read a tea-shop mystery before this one, so the iced tea café was such a fun change of pace.
It immediately established the exact kind of cozy world I love: a charming small town, a quirky cast of characters, food and drinks, a murder to solve, and enough romance simmering in the background to keep me invested.
Listening to the Series
I listened to the entire series on audio, and having all seven books narrated by Therese Plummer was a huge part of the experience for me.
She is always and forever my number one comfort narrator, so this was basically the audiobook equivalent of wrapping myself in a cozy blanket and settling into Charm for a while.
If you’re an audiobook listener who already loves Plummer’s narration, this series is an especially easy recommendation.
A Few Things I Loved About the Series
Beyond the mysteries themselves, there were so many little details that made this series work for me.
I adored Everly’s relationship with Grady’s son, and I loved the strong sense of family and community throughout the series. Everly’s great aunts are absolute gems, and the relationships between the Swan women give the series so much heart.
There are also just enough little hints of magic to make the world feel extra cozy without turning the series into a supernatural mystery. Lou the seagull being able to communicate with Everly and Maggie the cat were both ridiculously charming additions.
And then there’s the Swan family curse: the belief that men who marry Swan women are doomed to die young. Watching that thread develop throughout the series was such a fun addition to the ongoing story, especially as Everly and Grady’s relationship became more serious.
I also have to mention the Town Charmer, Charm’s gossip blog. It was such a perfect little detail for this community and added another layer of personality to the town.
About Bree Baker
Bree Baker is the author behind the Seaside Café Mysteries, a cozy mystery series filled with culinary sleuthing, charming small towns, quirky characters, and plenty of seasonal atmosphere.
Her books are especially good at creating communities that feel like places you could actually settle into for a while—which is probably why finishing this series felt a little bittersweet.
For me, the biggest takeaway from this series is simple: Bree Baker knows how to create a cozy world that makes you want to stay. She also writes under several other names including Julie Ann Lindsey, Julie Chase, Jaqueline Frost and more.
Final Thoughts
I absolutely adored this series. Spending my summer in Charm with Everly and the gang was a delight.
The mysteries were consistently solid, the characters became increasingly familiar and lovable, the seasonal settings were exactly my kind of cozy, and Everly’s relationships with her family, friends, Grady, and the wider Charm community gave the series so much heart.
I especially loved that the series could give me Christmas at the beach, Halloween in a haunted seaside town, summer surfing events, tea shop coziness, family recipes, a tiny hint of magic, and a murder mystery all within the same seven book world.
And while I was very happy with how Everly and Grady’s story wrapped up, finishing Pleading the Fish still came with that bittersweet “well, I guess I have to leave Charm now” feeling.
I went into the series looking for a fun culinary cozy and ended up completely invested in the town, the Swan family, the romances, the gossip, the animals, the recipes, the mysteries—and all of the little details that made Charm feel like home.
Seven books, one very cozy beach town, and an easy recommendation from me. Bree Baker can do no wrong.
