Cozy Ghost Stories, Paranormal Romances & Mysteries for Spooky Season

I love spooky season. I do not necessarily need every spooky season book to make me afraid to walk through my own house afterward.
Sometimes I want the aesthetic of Halloween without the actual terror: haunted houses, chatty ghosts, mediums, old inns, paranormal small towns and maybe a dead person who is considerably more helpful than threatening. Bonus points if somebody falls in love or solves a murder along the way.
So I put together 15 ghost books for readers who want supernatural fall vibes without reaching for full on horror. There are paranormal romances, cozy mysteries, haunted bookstores, ghostly houseguests and plenty of spirits who have unfinished business.
This is a discovery list rather than 15 books I’ve personally read and vetted, so you can pick your preferred variety of friendly haunting and build your own ghostly fall TBR.

Ghostly Romances & Cozy Paranormal Reads
The Dead Romantics — Ashley Poston

A romance ghostwriter who can see ghosts returns home after her father’s death—and discovers the handsome new editor who just rejected her deadline standing outside the funeral home. As a ghost. This one blends romance, grief, family and the supernatural into something much more heartfelt than frightening.
Haunted Ever After — Jen DeLuca

Cassie moves to the supposedly haunted Florida town of Boneyard Key, where her historic house develops some very suspicious electrical problems and a ghost starts communicating through refrigerator magnets. Luckily, the local coffee shop owner knows quite a bit about the town’s paranormal history. Ghosts, romance, coffee and a quirky coastal town make this one much more cozy spooky than scary.
Entities to Lovers — Mallory Marlowe

Rival ghost tour guides, paranormal shenanigans and a romance developing amid all the supernatural chaos make this a very October friendly rom com. This is for the reader who hears “ghost tour romance” and requires no additional sales pitch.
Happy Medium — Sarah Adler

Gretchen makes her living pretending to communicate with the dead—until she arrives at a goat farm and meets an actual ghost. Now she has to convince the farm’s skeptical owner that a supernatural curse is real while inconveniently falling for him. Ghost + con woman medium + grumpy farmer + goats is an excellent sentence.
A Ghost in Shining Armor — Therese Beharrie

Gemma can see ghosts and helps them resolve their unfinished business, but Levi isn’t her typical spirit. He has his own mission involving Gemma, and the two end up pretending he’s her boyfriend while very real feelings complicate his chance at a second life.
Rules for Ghosting — Shelly Jay Shore

A reluctant medium from a family that runs a funeral home would really prefer to avoid both ghosts and the family business. Naturally, neither cooperates. This one brings together romance, family, grief and paranormal elements for readers who like their ghost stories with plenty of heart.
Happily Ever Afterlife — Emma R. Alban

A paranormal romance built around a struggling writer, an unexpected ghost and the possibility that happily ever after might not end when life does. If your preferred haunting comes with romantic chemistry rather than screaming, this belongs on the list.
Cozy Mysteries With Very Nosy Ghosts
And then there is my personal favorite use for a fictional ghost: helping somebody solve a murder. 😂
Death Overdue — Allison Brook

A librarian working at a reportedly haunted library gets pulled into a murder investigation with some supernatural assistance. Books, ghosts and a cozy mystery are basically three of my favorite things shoved onto the same shelf.
Night of the Living Deed — E.J. Copperman

Alison renovates a Victorian fixer upper on the Jersey Shore and discovers that the property comes with two resident ghosts who need her help solving a mystery. Haunted house energy without haunted house terror.
Ghostly Undertaking — Tonya Kappes

A funeral home director who can communicate with ghosts gets a particularly inconvenient new client when a recently deceased spirit insists something about his death isn’t right. Small town mystery meets paranormal cozy in exactly the way you’d hope.
Be My Ghost — Carol J. Perry

A new innkeeper discovers her Florida B&B comes with an unexpected resident ghost—and soon finds herself tangled in a murder mystery. Give me an inn, a ghost and suspicious circumstances and I am listening.
Ghostly Paws — Leighann Dobbs

A bookstore owner who can see spirits gets paranormal help investigating a murder in her small New Hampshire town. There’s a cat involved too, because apparently cozy mysteries have scientifically determined all of my weaknesses.
The Ghost and Mrs. McClure — Cleo Coyle

A bookstore owner discovers her shop is haunted by the ghost of a hard boiled private investigator—and the unlikely pair end up solving mysteries together. A haunted bookshop AND a ghost detective? This series knew exactly what it was doing. The Ghost and Mrs. McClure launches the Haunted Bookshop Mystery series.
Steeped in Suspicion — Eryn Scott

Tea, paranormal activity and murder combine in this cozy mystery for readers who prefer their hauntings served alongside something warm to drink.
The Guest Is a Goner — Carly Winter

A paranormal cozy involving a B&B, ghostly activity and a murder investigation—which means we’re once again proving that staying at fictional inns is an absolutely terrible idea and I will continue reading about them anyway.
Spooky Vibes Without the Nightmares
What I love about ghost books is how many directions authors can take them. A ghost can be the romantic complication, the comic relief, the keeper of a secret, the world’s most unconventional amateur detective or simply the annoying supernatural roommate nobody asked for.
And these are the kinds of books I reach for when I want something that feels like spooky season without actually being scary. Give me the haunted bookstore. Give me the creaky old inn. Give me the ghost who has opinions about my dating life. Keep the nightmare fuel.
Perfect for Readers Who Love:
- Ghosts without horror
- Paranormal romance
- Cozy mysteries
- Haunted bookstores and libraries
- Inns and old houses
- Small town settings
- Mediums and supernatural sleuths
- Cozy spooky season vibes
Basically, if Casper is closer to your preferred ghost than The Conjuring, welcome. 👻😂
