Review:

It had been a while since I’d picked up a Helena Hunting book, and unfortunately, Chase Lovett Wants Me wasn’t the return I was hoping for. I usually have plenty of patience for college romances—I know these characters are young and expect some immaturity to come with the territory—but this one felt especially juvenile to me. The relationship between Cammie and Chase moved incredibly fast, with an almost immediate love/lust connection that made it difficult for me to become invested in them as a couple.

I also struggled with some of the humor and characterization. Cammie is presented as the nerdy, overlooked girl who secretly writes very spicy fanfiction and, surprise, has a much wilder side than anyone would expect. It’s a familiar setup, but here it felt more clichéd than fresh. And I simply could not get past Cammie referring to a certain part of her anatomy as “My Precious”especially once Chase started doing it too. 😂 Humor is incredibly subjective, but that particular running joke was very much not for me.

There were still pieces of the book that worked better for me. I liked the Tilton University setting, the hockey backdrop, and the larger friend group, all of which gave the series potential beyond this particular romance. There’s also plenty of steam for readers who like their college romances on the spicier side. In fact, I was interested enough in the surrounding characters and world that I immediately started book two, and thankfully, that one worked much better for me.

Overall, Chase Lovett Wants Me was a miss for my personal taste. The combination of insta love/lust, over the top humor, and familiar character tropes made the story feel younger than I prefer, even for a freshman year college romance. But since I enjoyed the next installment significantly more, I’m glad I didn’t let this one convince me to give up on the Tilton University series entirely.
