Review:

I have a confession to make. I’m bit obsessed with Christmas. Think Buddy the Elf. So naturally when I saw this title on Netgalley I was thrilled! I know what you may be thinking, it’s September Amy! Why would you even be thinking about Christmas?! Well folks, that’s what I do. I start thinking about next Christmas on December 26th. So basically, I never stop thinking about it. Enough about me, let me get to the point here. This book really got me even more into the festive spirit and sparked my enthusiasm for all Christmassy things and I couldn’t be more excited!

Piper is just a lovely and personable woman. She had some tragedies in her young life, but twelve years later and she has found her niche in the world. She’s a mystery reviewer in the hotel industry and travels the world staying in fabulous hotels for free! Talk about a dream job. Gabe was her first love and let’s just say things did not end well between the two of them. When she learns that her latest reviewing assignment is to cover the hotel Gabe owns she is shocked and unsure how to feel about seeing him again. They begin a tentative friendship but it’s clear they still have feelings for each other. I really wanted to like Gabe as he had so many very good qualities but he was so wishy washy in regards to his feelings towards Piper that he often irritated me. His daughter Wren however, was just a darling child and her humor and sweet innocence charmed me.

My favorite part of this book was the setting, hands down. Stardust Lake Hotel is simply magical and enchanting. Martin’s descriptions of this picturesque town were gorgeous and all I could envision is a perfect winter wonderland. The Christmas market in the town sounds amazing, I’m still trying to figure out how I can manage to do my Christmas shopping there this year?! 😂 The details about each shop and their offerings sounded absolutely beautiful and unique. My favorite one was where an artist makes delicate and intricate snow globes. Swoon worthy stuff.

If you’re like me and you long for the holiday season read this one. It transports the reader to a town called Christmas that is utterly charming and sounds breathtakingly gorgeous. Even if you’re not a huge fan of the holidays, give it a try anyway as you might be surprised by how the book will make you feel. I really wanted to grab a hot chocolate, a plush throw and read under a crackling fire, but as I’m in Arizona and it’s very hot still I refrained. The second book in this series, Christmas Under a Starlight Sky is being released in October and I’m excited to continue reading about this magical, festive town.

Review: The Lost Mother by Tracy Buchanan

Goodreads|Amazon|Author Website
Release date: September 2, 2016

Publisher: Bookouture

Genre: Women’s Fiction

Goodreads blurb:

How far would you go for those you love the most?

When Louise McKenzie’s mother is reported missing after the Boxing Day tsunami, Louise leaves her young family and travels to Thailand. There, she finds a bag containing her mother’s passport and a book filled with beautifully illustrated maps: The Atlas of Us, belonging to a woman named Claire.

Who is Claire? How was Louise’s mom connected to her? And might the atlas help Louise find the answers she needs – and her mom?

As Louise pores over the keepsakes hidden amongst its pages, she pieces together the mystery of a love affair, a dark tragedy and a secret both Claire and her mother would go to the ends of the earth to protect.

A gripping, page-turning and emotionally powerful story about love, loss and making peace with the past

Review:

Within the past few months I’ve become a huge fan of Tracy Buchanan’s having read both No Turning Back and My Sister’s Secret and immensely enjoying both. I knew as soon as I saw The Lost Mother was being released in the US I had to read it. Usually if I read at least three books by an author that captive me I add them to my auto buy list. I’m delighted to say that I just added Buchanan to it!

This book is really two separate narratives that eventually merge into one. Told in both the past and the present and from two viewpoints, first from Louise in 2004 immediately following the devastating tsunami in Thailand and from Claire beginning a few years before the tsunami. For much of the book I was wondering what these two women had in common but Buchanan slowly tells their individual stories then before you know it things begin to piece together.

Louise is desperate to find her mother who was in Thailand when the tsunami hit. They’ve been estranged for two years and she is full of regret and sorrow while she searches frantically for her mother. As she begins to unravel the puzzle of what happened to her mother, Nora she gets way more confusing information than she bargained for. Claire is a character that touched me deeply, especially as she detailed her struggles with infertility. I can’t imagine the pain and heartbreak that comes with being told you will never conceive.

I’ve mentioned in my other reviews of Buchanan’s work that she has a magical quality to her writing, especially her magnificent use of stunning imagery. She writes such a detailed and deeply rich narrative full of enchanting descriptions of the setting. The Lost Mother hops all around the globe to some exotic and far flung places and the way she describes these cities allows the reader to fully immerse themselves into the story. There were times that I really felt like I was standing next to Louise and Claire smelling the sea air or feeling the red Australian sand beneath my feet.

This book really has something for every type of reader. There is romance, a bit of suspense, mystery, painful secrets and drama along with a deep and emotional depth, both in the characters and the plot. The storyline is complicated but not in a frustrating way, just an interesting way that absorbed me until the very last page.

This book was previously published as Three Little Birds

Review:

What a lovely read Take a Chance on Me was! I was really in the mood for an easy and light read and this was just the right book for that. I felt like I was reading a story about people that I would actually want to be a part of my life and the ending of this book was rather bittersweet for me only because I didn’t want it to end.

Charlie is the main character and I just adore her. She has made a good life for herself after the devastating loss of her teenage daughter and then shortly after her divorce from her husband. The problem? She’s not fulfilled whatsoever and she longs for a contented and happy life. On New Year’s Eve her and her best friend, Mercedes decide to make a Carpe Diem list, much like a bucket list. In their inebriated state, they choose silly and outrageous things. Mercedes decides to change things up a bit and the two switch lists, which made for some silly fun.

All of the characters in this book are lovable and sweet in their own way. From Mercedes and her husband, to Charlie’s coworkers at both the hospital and the cafe, to her sweet elderly neighbor with a quirky and funny pet bird, Bert, I truly loved them all. Everything about this book is warm and heartfelt  and there is a great message at play. It’s about living life to the fullest and taking risks even if you’re scared or fear looking foolish.

If Charlie were real I would head over to the UK and make her be my friend, hell I would make the entire cast become my friend because every single one of them was utterly charming and loads of fun. My only slight complaint was things were very predictable as far as major plot points, but I was still surprised by Charlie’s adventures. I didn’t even really care all that much about the predictability because I was having so much fun reading this, I swear I laughed out loud numerous times.

Review: Daisy in Chains by Sharon Bolton

Goodreads|Amazon|Author Website
Release date: September 20, 2016

Publisher: Penguin UK

Genre: Psychological Thriller

Goodreads blurb:

Famous killers have fan clubs.

Hamish Wolfe is no different. Locked up for the rest of his life for the abduction and murder of three young women, he gets countless adoring letters every day. He’s handsome, charismatic and very persuasive. His admirers are convinced he’s innocent, and that he’s the man of their dreams.

Who would join such a club?

Maggie Rose is different. Reclusive and enigmatic; a successful lawyer and bestselling true-crime writer, she only takes on cases that she can win.

Hamish wants her as his lawyer, he wants her to change his fate. She thinks she’s immune to the charms of a man like this. But maybe not this time . . .

Would you?

Review:

This was my first Sharon Bolton novel and I can honestly say that I’m completely blown away by how brilliant this book was! I’ve had several blogger friends rave about how good it was, but it was even better and more captivating than I could have ever imagined. I now feel the need to completely ignore my TBR schedule and read every single thing that Bolton has ever wrote.

The format of this book was mostly standard, but I loved the bits where there were letters, correspondence, articles and blog posts interspersed. I love epistolary books and the hint here only added to the excellence of an already fantastic book. There are three main characters; Hamish Wolfe a convicted serial killer, Maggie Rose a lawyer who has managed to get several prisoners released after taking on their cases, and Pete the detective who helped lock Hamish up.

Maggie is rather a interesting woman. She is private, reclusive but very sharp and clever. When Hamish tries to persuade her to take him on as a client she is reticent. He is magnetic, charming, but also cunning and manipulative. Pete is the most likable of the bunch as he just seems like an ordinary guy who has been through some tough times as of late. All of these characters are so rich and full of depth, with several layers to their personalities.

I’ve always found it fascinating that there really are women who begin relationships with convicted killers while they are in jail. You always wonder what leads them to think, gee I think I’ll write a letter to Ted Bundy today and tell him what a fan I am. Seems so bizarre to get involved with such dangerous people.I liked that this book explored that topic and gave some insight into what these women may be thinking, it’s oddly intriguing.

Daisy in Chains is one of those books that really keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time you’re reading it. Or devouring it, as was the case with me. It is a constant guessing game where you’re wondering who to trust and I had the slightly uncomfortable but rather enjoyable feeling of being manipulated myself. The biggest question was is Hanish guilty or innocent? It’s a total head game. I can’t say much more without revealing Bolton’s clever plot details, but the twist was a killer! I read the final few chapters at a manic pace and was left completely breathless and stunned by the ending. Absolutely brilliant.

About Material Witness

Series: Heroes of Providence, Book 1
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Who does she trust when the horror of one of her crime novels turns into a deadly reality?

Bestselling crime novelist, Cassie Alvarez, aka Cassie Lang, had murder on her mind when she walked into Rory’s Bar under dressed and under cover to research her latest crime novel. Researching the cool, blue-eyed and dashingly handsome man at the end of the bar stirred her senses more than she wanted to admit. But was this man of leather armor all he appeared to be?

Playing White Knight to an innocent wasn’t how Detective Jake Santos planned to spend his time under cover. But there was no way “CJ” was what she claimed to be and that nagging tightness in Jake’s chest told him he’d better take her home to safety and leave it at that. Then the barroom exploded with gunfire, leaving a trail of dead that includes a notorious Providence organized crime boss and an undercover FBI agent. When Cassie’s name is leaked to the media as the only witness to the grisly murders, Cassie insists she only trusts Jake to protect her.

The FBI wants their star witness happy and will do anything to make sure Cassie testifies. But someone wants vigilante justice and it is clear to Jake that the shooter isn’t the only person who wants Cassie dead. Not knowing who to trust, he vows to protect Cassie at all cost despite the fact that guarding the beautiful novelist is a serious distraction.

Top 5 Wednesday

Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly post that is hosted by Sam from Thoughts On Tomes and there is also a Goodreads group where you can find more information. This weeks topic is books you would like to see as TV shows.

Books I Want To See As TV Shows:

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book and I think it would make a compelling TV series. There is definitely enough drama and intrigue to support a series and I was fascinated by the preparations for The Storm.

The Wedding Belles series by Lauren Layne would make such a cute TV show! You have tons of cute characters, like Brooke and Seth from To Have and To Hold then there’s Heather and Josh from For Better Or Worse. Plus, there are plenty of other fun characters that would make a great cast!

The Dollhouse would be so fantastic, very Mad Men! I can just imagine the clothes and the setting of 1950’s NYC 😍

The Sister would be a totally gripping TV show, I kept looking over my should while reading the book, I can’t imagine what a show would make me do.

For my last one, I’m going with Here’s To Us, but really I’ve often thought that any Hilderbrand novel would make a great TV show. The wealthy and fabulous who are always hiding things and wrapped up in drama? Totally my kind of show! I may watch a lot of trashy reality TV. Real Housewives being one of my favorites.

So what books would you guys like to see as TV shows?

Q & A: Katie Fforde

I’m ecstatic to have the lovely Katie Fforde here today for a Q & A! Her latest book, Recipe For Love is out TODAY!

You can find it on Amazon.

Look at this gorgeous cover! I swear all of her book covers are just beautiful.

Q & A

1. What’s a typical writing day for you look like? Describe your perfect writing environment.

A typical writing day for me starts early, but with a lot of procrastination. I look at my emails, twitter, and play several games of Spider patience. When I’m up against a deadline, I try to avoid twitter until after I’ve done my work – about 1000 words a day. I really like writing when away from home. There are far fewer distractions then. I love going on writing retreats and always get lots done. When all your friends are writing away like mad, you have to as well. I aim to get 2 thousand words a day done then.

2. How did you get started writing? Was it something that you’ve always loved?

I was given a prod by my mother. I’d talked about wanting to write (expecting to wait until my children were a bit bigger, my daughter was only two) but she obviously felt now was the time and gave me a writing kit for Christmas. She made it up herself and gathered pens, correction paper (Tippex) a dictionary, a thesaurus, a ream of paper and other bits and pieces and put them in a box file. I made it my New Year’s resolution for that year to get started. I could only write when my husband was home from the sea and I gave myself an hour a day. I loved it! The hour would stretch as long as it was allowed to. But it took me eight years to get published.

3. Who are your favorite writers/inspirations?

Georgette Heyer was a great inspiration but I didn’t realise that until someone said they saw her influence in my writing. She is one of our greatest historical novelists and I write contemporary fiction so I assumed there was no connection.

4.  Anything you can tell us about upcoming projects?

I am just about to start writing a Christmas novella which will come out as an e book. It’s set in Somerby, which is the big house that appears in Wedding Season, Love Letters and Recipe for Love. Several of the characters that appear in those books will be there as well as a new romantic story. I think it will be fun. Then I’ll start my next novel (number 24) which is going to have a farming background.

5.  Normally how do you develop plots/characters? Brief us on your process.

Characters come easily to me but plots are harder. There are rare but lovely times when the story bubbles out and I think, this happens and then happens but more often, the story reveals itself to me bit by bit. The characters are more fun. I start with a theme and then think, what sort of woman would be in this situation? Why is she in that situation? That process is fun. Then I have to think about her man. Men are harder because, as we women know, there are very few eligible bachelors about so if a man is to be single, he has to have a good reason for it.

6.  Favorite character from one of your own novels?

I think Polly, from Living Dangerously, my first novel, is my favourite. She had my job, my keep fit class, my fondness for jumble sales and is very like me. She is/was younger and much more attractive than I am but we do have the same sort of hair.

7.  Preferred method for readers to contact you?

Twitter is probably the best way for readers to contact me. They can email me via my website but they don’t always get through. Twitter always works, I think.

8. On average, how long does it take you to write a book?

It takes about 6-8 months to write the first draft but then there is editing, (which would be things like, we need another character, or something, fortunately that doesn’t happen so often these days) and then copy editing, which is the little details like, I have given February 5 weeks in it! Then after that, proof reading. After all that is done, copies will go out to magazines and things for reviews. The whole process takes about a year.

9. Which one of your characters do you relate to the most?

I always relate most to the character I am writing. When I’m in her head so much, I almost feel I am her. I loved being a midwife in Summer at Sea but then I loved being a gardner in A Secret Garden which won’t be out until February in the UK.

11. If writing wasn’t your career what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t a writer I probably would have been a counsellor or something like that. I love listening to people.

12. What’s the best compliment that you’ve received about your work?

I had a lovely email recently from a woman who’d gone through treatment for breast cancer. She said she couldn’t sleep and so every night would read my books and feel she was with a friend. It was a very moving email to receive.

Thanks so much to Katie for answering my questions, it was truly a pleasure!

Review: At Risk by S.G. Redling

Goodreads|Amazon|Author Website
Release date: September 20, 2016

Publisher: Thomas and Mercer

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Goodreads blurb:

Colleen McElroy grew up wealthy and pampered, the daughter of a prominent society family in Lexington, Kentucky. But her privileged upbringing could not prepare or protect her from her cruel and abusive first husband. Although her calamitous marriage left her with physical and emotional scars that have yet to heal, they haven’t prevented her from doing her best to rebuild her life.
Charismatic Patrick McElroy has scars of his own from his traumatic childhood in the foster care system, but with his business partner, John, he has built a celebrated, state-of-the-art home for at-risk youths. When one goes missing, Colleen is plunged into a nightmare of uncertainty about the girl’s disappearance. Is she paranoid, seeing disasters where there is just bad luck, or does an unspeakable evil lurk behind the new life she’s made for herself? No longer sure of whom she can trust, Colleen will have to rely on herself to discover the truth.

Review:

Despite what I read in the blurb, this book wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. I assumed that it would be a domestic suspense novel with some thrills and chills. Instead, it was a slow and steady buildup to an frenetic and shockingly violent climax. I think the slower first portion of the book lulled me into a sense of calm and comfort so when everything began to ramp up, I was sort of blindsided.

Colleen is the main character and I truly felt for her. She escaped the horrific abuse of her first husband and has found happiness with Patrick, a kind and caring man who loves her unconditionally. He survived a truly awful childhood and they bonded over their shared horrors. Things are practically perfect now, they have each other and Pat has a successful business with his lifelong best friend, John. Colleen has a fragile, yet budding friendship with John’s wife, Bix and is slowly starting to heal old wounds. Despite her constant insecurities, Colleen begins to seriously doubt several things in her life even if she is not used to trusting her own intuition. Is she just being unreasonable or are there really secrets hiding that could have deadly consequences for her?

The truth, as it turns out, is far more shocking and abhorrent than I could have ever guessed. I love when an author manages to surprise me and this book definitely did that. In fact, while reading this I was sure this was going to be a three star read for me, if that. The last quarter of the book was so compelling and full of revelations that I bumped up my rating a full star. The ending was left pretty open ended, but for once I wasn’t put off by that. I was satisfied by the answers that were provided and maybe even a little hopeful that the author will do more with these characters in a future book.

This book was such a mixed bag because the majority was pretty tame, yet still engaging. I was waiting for the other shoe to drop, but I wasn’t annoyed by the wait. But then when things start to actually happen, it turns gory, violent and disturbing. Some scenes were real nail biters and I was completely mesmerized. If you don’t like gritty and graphic scenes though, this book may be a problem for you and I feel the need to warn you because I think that it would be easy to assume that this one would be rather tame. And it is, for the most part, but the violent scenes were descriptive enough that I feel a heads up is necessary.

Overall rating: 4/5

MARGARITAS & MURDER: The Sunny Truly Mystery Series – Book 1

The first thing I did when I entered the store was quell my hunger with a Kit Kat bar, then I located what I needed to jazz up my look. I didn’t need to worry about my eyes. I had naturally thick eyelashes and wore eyeliner too, but I normally only used a light balm for my lips. That wouldn’t do.

I bought a cherry red lipstick, nail polish, safety pins, a dozen silver glitter pens and three small silver bows. When I climbed back into my car, I peeled out of my blouse, unhooked my black bra and went to work

Thirty minutes later, as I stood in line waiting to get into The Celestial, I unbutton my gray blouse to reveal my black bra, now covered with silver swirls and the three bows, which I pinned into the v-shaped front.

I got a glimpse of myself in a store window. Red lips, red nails, and Cleopatra eyes. Not bad. Not me, but not bad, except, of course, I’d forgotten about my ponytail. I was undoing it when a stranger behind me oozed, “Leave it, babe. It’s got that sex-kitten girl-next-door vibe.”

Cringing at his creepy voice, I popped my blonde hair out of the ponytail.

“Aw, you ruined it, girlie,” Creepy griped and leaned in closer. “Tell you what. You put your hair back up, and I’ll buy ya a drink inside.”

I frowned at him. “No, thanks.”

“You got your nerve,” he sneered. “Why? You think you look hot? You don’t. Not in that turd ugly blouse.”

I skittered forward a few steps, trying to cut off any further attempts at conversation. Luckily, his cell beeped and he stepped out of the line to have a private conversation.

I glanced down at my blouse. Maybe Creepy had a point.

When I got closer to the door, I whipped off the blouse entirely and stood there in my black and silver bra, waiting for the bouncer’s approval.

If I thought too long about what I was doing, I’d blush from head to toe. The bouncer eyed me. I hefted the twins (modest Bs) with a grin to the bouncer. He grinned back, and I was in.

Inside, I slipped the gray blouse back on, but left it unbuttoned as I threaded my way through the crowd of dancing bodies.

The cavernous interior was dark, except for the star-shaped maroon, green and blue neon lights flashing on the ceiling and walls. Occasional spotlights skimmed the crowd. House music vibrated fast and furious from the speakers.

I remembered Sam telling me that the best thing to do in a new place was to first get your bearings. I scanned the space to see what was what. The dance floor ran the length of the building, starting near the entrance and ending by the stage, which was set up close to the back wall.

Not far from the stage, I spied an ornate, highly polished mahogany spiral staircase leading up to a rooftop lounge. It looking like it belonged to a different century. I figured that was the point. Ultra-modern mixed with the historic for an eclectic blend, echoing the city’s view of itself.

Several couples were standing near the top of the landing looking down on the stage where a five-piece band was covering an old hit by Justin Timberlake. On the dance floor, men and women, most of whom were young and gorgeous, rocked out.

On the right side of the club, I noticed a lounge area dotted with loveseats, club chairs and coffee tables. It was populated by men of various ages and young women with big hair and bigger boobs.

On the left side was an impressive brass and mahogany bar with five bartenders in attendance: four handsome young men clad in silver and black uniforms and a lone woman, her sleek dark ponytail perched high up on her head. She had on a long-sleeved black blouse and black trousers.

I decided to approach her.

Bad choice. She was all business, no time or inclination to chat.

I moved down the bar to one of the male barkeeps. His gaze swept over my glittery bra as he bustled over to me.

I was about to order a drink when I noticed Creepy coming my way, his lusty expression sending a chill from my crown to my toes. I had to do something fast.

Moving away from the bar to get out of his radar, I ran smack dab into a big man in a shiny, expensive three-piece suit.

“Whoa there,” he cooed to me, his hands looping around my waist. His florid face moved closer to mine like he was going to French me. I quickly turned away and his tongue licked my cheek. Yuck.

Cringing, I pulled out of his grasp. Then I recognized him. It was Conrad Hollister, aka Big Tex. He wasn’t wearing the white Stetson or the cowboy boots, but it was him.

Another face appeared over Hollister’s shoulder. Cool blue eyes pinned me, and a zing of surprise, and panic, prickled up my spine. Detective John Rock.

I almost called out to him, but stopped myself when I realized he might be here undercover.

Another thought countered the first one. Maybe this was a regular hangout for him. Yet how was that possible on a detective’s salary? The Celestial was one of the most upscale nightclubs in Austin.

Hollister squeezed my arm, bringing my attention back to the big man. “I’ve got business right now, little filly, but you stay put and I’ll come back around for you.” His lips curled into a smug smile and then he darted away, disappearing into the crowd.

I sighed, glad not to have to deal with Hollister when the detective was so nearby. I gave Rock a sidelong glance. He said nothing, nothing at all and turned to walk off. Hmm. Maybe he didn’t recognize me.

I watched him go over to the bar, passing by several empty stools until he reached the section where the female bartender with the sleek ponytail was busily mixing drinks. He slid onto a stool and waited.

Seconds later, she came over to him. They spoke. I was too far away to hear what was said. I gathered that he had ordered a drink because she stepped away and returned quickly to pour him a double.

Rock swiveled around on the barstool and scanned the club. Our eyes met momentarily. His expression remained neutral. Maybe I was right. He hadn’t recognized me.

I did look a lot different than when he saw me at my apartment with my bed head hair, broken glasses and Shrek pajamas. And later, at the hospital when I was there with Lila, I had on my usual “get thee to a nunnery” garb—black pants and a matching blazer.

Just then a cool brunette in a crotch-high mini-skirt sashayed by and Rock’s gaze shifted to her. I was certain then that he hadn’t recognized me.

The band segued into a pop tune, which drew more people to the dance floor. I wandered around and, after a few minutes, I spied Hollister leading two couples up the spiral staircase. I considered following him up to the rooftop lounge. I wasn’t sure if it was the smartest move to make, but the opportunity was there, so why not take it?

I had made it midway up the staircase when my attention was drawn to the lounge area where glamorous young women in strapless or backless cocktail dresses were chatting with men in suits.

One dark-haired beauty, perched on the edge of a sofa, threw her head back laughing, while her companion, a distinguished, silver-haired older man, signaled the waiter for more drinks.

A gasp seeped out of me. “Lila?”

What the…? What was she doing here? Too stunned to move, I watched my sister in full flirtation mode with a man who, I speculated, could be older than our father.

Once the shock lessened, I forced my body to move and hurried back down the staircase. I tried to cut across the dance floor, but the crowd was quickly expanding like fungus and barred my path.

Raging like a diva whose latte had grown cold, I elbowed my way through. By the time I got to the lounge, bad had gone to worse.

Lila, in a strapless purple cocktail dress, was still perched on the sofa, but now she was talking to Detective Rock.

I stalked up to them. “Lila!”

Her face blew up in shock. “What are you doing here?”

“Me?” I snapped. “What are you doing here?”

Review:

Sometimes I need a break from reading dark and twisted thrillers and when I picked up Margaritas and Murder I was definitely in the mood for something on the lighter side. This book perfectly satisfied my need to settle down with a comfortable and cozy book and made for a delightfully fun read.

Sunny is the heroine and she reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones as she’s just a normal woman with some spunk. I loved that she had a real appetite and love of food and wasn’t afraid to show it. All to often romantic heroines are portrayed as flawlessly beautiful and stick thin, but she is a real woman, one who I would hang out with if given the chance. She continuously finds herself in comical situations and Osgood painted a picture of hilarity. The whole time I was reading this book I felt like I was watching a beloved romantic comedy.

Though this book isn’t scary or creepy, make no mistake, there is still a mystery that needs to be solved. One of my favorite things about this book is that almost every chapter ended on some sort of cliffhanger that urged me to keep on reading. Added to the mystery there was a colorful cast of characters that brought warmth and flirtatiousness to the table. From the sexy detective John Rock to Sunny’s boss Cleve to her sister Lila, and many more, there is something for everyone.
