Synopsis:
Four decades ago, Ida and Jean got away with murder.
Now settling into her golden years, Ida’s biggest problems are HOA squabbles, grown kids who don’t visit enough, and irritating neighbors. But when the electrical lines in their backyard need replacing, Ida knows that digging up the ground will unearth their long held the bodies of their late husbands.
After a series of failed attempts to keep the electrical company from digging, Jean shoots the worker poised to break ground in their yard, launching the couple into their last big adventure together. To outwit the detective that’s hot on their trail, they go on the run to San Francisco, the place they’d always meant to visit, but that the fear of coming out as a lesbian couple had always kept them from.
Review:
What do you get when you combine two elderly women, a decades old double murder, a cross country escape, and one very grumpy leading lady? A surprisingly heartfelt, darkly funny, and delightfully chaotic adventure!
Set in 1999, this story had such a fun throwback feel, but what really made it special for me were Ida and Jean. I absolutely adored these two women! They were such memorable, endearing characters, and their relationship was truly the heart of the book. While the premise promises murder, secrets, and a wild escape from the law, this was ultimately much more of a love story than anything else, and I loved that unexpected direction.
Ida in particular stole my heart with her grumpy personality, sharp wit, and wonderfully dark sense of humor. She is absolutely my kind of gal! The banter and ridiculous situations these women found themselves in provided plenty of laughs, but there was also so much tenderness beneath all that chaos.
I also appreciated the deeper themes woven throughout the story. The exploration of LGBTQ+ experiences in the late ‘90s, the challenges of living authentically, and the complicated dynamics of family relationships gave this book some genuine emotional weight. Ida and Jean’s love story was both touching and meaningful, especially considering everything they’d faced together.
There was still plenty of suspense as the women attempted to evade the authorities, and I genuinely never knew what was going to happen next. Their increasingly chaotic adventure kept things entertaining, but my investment was always in the characters and their happiness rather than the mystery itself.
This was such a charming surprise! Funny, heartfelt, a little outrageous, and full of personality, Happily Ever After the Murders reminded me that sometimes the most memorable stories aren’t really about the crimes at all, but about the people committing them. I enjoyed every minute I spent with Ida and Jean, and I was genuinely sad to say goodbye to these two unforgettable women.
