Life is never easy when you are a boy inside.

Review:

I’m delighted to be opening the blog tour for The Boy Inside today and want to wish Ross Greenwood a very happy publication day!

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this book, but whatever I was anticipating, it wasn’t what I received. I don’t mean that in a negative way at all, this was just so highly different from any other crime novel that I have read before. It wasn’t typical in the sense that there was a case to be solved, or a detective to follow, or even a killer narrating, things that fans of this genre have seen before and even come to expect. Instead it was a dark and harrowing look into the life of a teenager who bounces in and out of the prison system and how this effects his fragile life in many ways.

The book starts when Ben is about fifteen and his life is ok, not too bad at all. He’s an only child and his parents are still married, and though they may not be rolling in the dough, he’s taken well care of for the most part. When his dad gets cancer and passes away, his mom turns to alcohol and Ben finds that he mostly has to take care of himself. He meets Jake, another local teenager and before too long he’s dabbling in petty crimes, and actually enjoying himself. He has no idea at the time that this will be his fatal mistake.

The book continues to follow Ben and Jake until Ben is twenty one as he gets locked up and released only to be picked up again as he can’t seem to keep his nose clean. His struggles were awful and heartbreaking and the worst part of all for me at least, was that this is an accurate reality for many young men. Ben didn’t have the necessary resources to stay out of prison even though he never wanted to be there. His mother was battling her own demons against alcohol and he was hanging around the wrong crowd so the odds were never in his favor. This was very gritty and dark, and as much as I was rooting for Ben, it really seemed like he never had a real chance at a normal, prison free life.

If you’re looking for an entirely different type of book that is heavily character driven, you would enjoy this one.

About the Author:

Ross was born in 1973 in Peterborough and lived there until he was twenty, attending The King’s School in the city. He then began a rather nomadic existence, living and working all over the country and various parts of the world.

He found himself returning to Peterborough many times over the years, usually when things had gone wrong. It was on one of these occasions that he met hs partner about a hundred metres from his back door whilst walking a dog. Two children swiftly followed. He’s still a little stunned by the pace of it now.

This book was started a long time ago but parenthood and then four years as a prison officer got in the way. Ironically it was the four a.m. feed which gave him the opportunity to finish the book as unable to get back to sleep, he completed it in the early morning hours.

Review:

I couldn’t be any happier to welcome you to my stop on the blog tour for Don’t Look Behind You today! Catch up on the other stops for reviews and extracts.

This is the second book in the Eden Berrishford series, I loved the first one, (you can find my review here) so I’ve been impatiently awaiting this book as I knew we would be finding out more about Eden and her past. This book sees Eden and her team looking into the brutal attacks on several local women. Simultaneously, Eden is trying to keep Carla safe, a woman who is always looking over her shoulder especially now as her absuive ex husband has just been released from jail. Lots going on here, this one is the definition of a page turner.

All of the different scenarios here revolve around abused women making for a disturbing read, yet one that is relevant and sadly, true to life. Eden is trying to catch the man responsible for physically and sexually assaulting local women, then she works with a shelter called the Willows that provides a safe haven when battered women have no where else to turn. Carla is one of these abused women, but she works there now and does her best to keep everyone safe. Her ex, Ryan will never fully let her go and her story really pulled at my heartstrings. It’s told slowly, in flashbacks starting twenty one years ago and the truth about the events that led to him being locked away were sad and terrifying.

I loved getting to know more about Eden personally as well as professionally. Danny, her estranged husband is back, but in what capacity? She’s still dating Joe but Danny’s reappearance puts a strain both on her relationship with Joe and her daughter Casey. The whole situation is left unfinished, leaving the door wide open for book three and there could be serious implications for Eden in the future.

Sherratt has a knack for creating very relatable characters in a short timeframe, her books are rapidly paced and extremely engaging, yet she still manages to forge a connection between the reader and the characters. Her writing style is also very realistic which is almost creepy as you can easily picture the situations she crafts being ripped from the headlines. I read this book in a single day, it really kept me on the edge of my seat as things heated up and ended in a astonishing conclusion, but one that was wholly justifiable.

Detective Inspector Denis Hamilton is haunted when the suspicious death of a teenage girl triggers suppressed memories. With a stalker targeting vulnerable women in Central London, and his team rapidly diminishing, Hamilton must conquer his emotions before another family is destroyed.

In a sleepy town in Hertfordshire, Katy has worked hard to rebuild her life after leaving behind everything she knew. But when her past catches up with her, and her young son’s life is threatened, Katy must admit her true identity if she has any hope of surviving.

A home should be a safe place, shouldn’t it? But sometimes it is hard to know who you can trust…

London’s murder investigations team returns in the second novel from the bestselling author of In the Shadows.

Review:

I’m so excited for my stop on the No Safe Home blog tour!

The entire concept behind this one sends a cold chill up and down my spine. Imagine not feeling safe in your own home? It should always be ones safe haven and for the women being targeted by a serial killer in this book, it’s anything but safe. DI Hamilton and team must apprehend this stone cold killer, after all he’s not only killing women, he’s killing their small children as well. Unfortunately for them, the team is rapidly dwindling and the remaining members are left scrambling to wrap this one up, even though they desperately need extra help.

The prologue in this book instantly made my heart race and thrusts the reader right into the action. A woman at home with her son stumbles upon an intruder, and things become absolutely terrifying, fast. Lyons sure knows how to set the stage for a fast paced read, there was always something exciting going on, with either DI Hamilton and team or Katy and her son Frankie.

Since the team has recently lost some valuable members, they’re in the process of adding some new blood. Rocky is a recent transfer who I really liked and I’m looking forward to seeing more of him in book three. Hamilton struggles with a case separate from the serial killer one, and it hits way too close to home and it broke my heart into pieces. Katy was easy for me to connect with as a mother as I totally understood her desire to protect her child at all costs. Connecting to a novels characters is always important to me and I found I could connect with each and every one here. (Besides the killer 😜)

This was a quick read, begging to be finished in one sitting, with short chapters that propel you to just read one more chapter. I thought I had things all figured out, and thought, that’s ok it was still an interesting story. Then bam! Dead wrong, gotta love when that happens, these clever authors. Overall it was a solid crime novel and I would I can definitely recommend for fans of the genre.

Review:

I’m delighted to welcome you to my stop on the blog tour for Sister, Sister

Wow what a ride this book was! It had all the elements necessary to create a top notch psychological thriller; family secrets and betrayals, drama, intrigue, twists and turns galore, and a sense of paranoia throughout leaving you unsure who to trust.

Clare and Alice are sisters who were separated when they were very young. For twenty years, Clare and her mother have tried to find Alice and reunite their family. Their dreams have finally come true and Alice is home at last. But the happy family reunion that Clare has always imagined isn’t the reality. Something is off with Alice, Clare can sense it, but no one believes her and labels her as jealous and insecure. Desperate to find out what’s really going on with her sister, she begins digging into Alice’s life but the consequences of these actions will be earth shattering for her.

Clare narrates the entire story and at first, I really liked her and so wanted her to reconnect with Alice. As things progress Clare becomes paranoid and starts behaving erratically and I had no idea if I could believe what she said or not. Was she a completely unreliable narrator? Or were there parts of her story that were actually true? I love not being able to pinpoint who I can trust in a psychological thriller and I especially love the extra layer of tension and dread this tactic adds.

There was a constant build up of the tension as Clare becomes more irrational the deeper she digs into her sisters past and everything comes to a head in an exciting conclusion that I didn’t even come close to guessing. I made several predictions while reading this and I was wrong about every single one. I love being dead wrong and that feeling of shock and awe happened to me more times than I can count here. This was a really strong psychological thriller that’s guaranteed to delight fans of the genre.

Review:

Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for Games People Play

This book opens with the abduction of baby Lily and my anxiety about what had happened to her and where she ended up never dissipated. Charlie Cameron is a PI in Glasgow and his speciality is finding missing people, but he doesn’t take cases where there is a child missing. Ever. Mark Hamilton is Lily’s father and when he begs Charlie for help, he can’t resist despite knowing that this is exactly the type of case he should steer clear of. As he begins to follow the very few leads given to him, Charlie battles demons from his past and the truth about the child’s abduction brings many surprising twists along the way.

Besides the case of Lily, there is a serial killer who’s just been captured and his victims are all children. As the locations of their gravesites are shared, (maddeningly slowly) none of them are Lily. Mullen crafted a cunning killer with this character, one that made my skin crawl and sent cold chills up my spine.

I loved that Charlie was a PI and not a cop, it brought a refreshing and unique perspective to the book. Though the story is full of a fantastic cast of characters I connected with Charlie the most. He’s complex, full of a variety of issues that really humanized him. The setting of Glasgow was beautiful and played nicely alongside the plot, which speaking of the plot, it was tense and tightly wound and ended up going in directions that I wasn’t expecting.

I also have to mention Mullen’s use of humor, it was spot on and there were plenty of scenes with witty banter that made me chuckle. I can’t wait to see what happens to Charlie next, both personally and professionally and crime fiction fans looking for a fresh and engaging read need to grab this one ASAP.

Genre: Crime Fiction

Blurb:

1955. Two young couples move to the uninhabited, isolated fjord of Hedinsfjörður. Their stay ends abruptly when one of the women meets her death in mysterious circumstances. The case is never solved. Fifty years later an old photograph comes to light, and it becomes clear that the couples may not have been alone on the fjord after all…

In nearby Siglufjörður, young policeman Ari Thór tries to piece together what really happened that fateful night, in a town where no one wants to know, where secrets are a way of life. He’s assisted by Ísrún, a news reporter in Reykjavik, who is investigating an increasingly chilling case of her own. Things take a sinister turn when a child goes missing in broad daylight. With a stalker on the loose, and the town of Siglufjörður in quarantine, the past might just come back to haunt them.

Review:

Welcome to my stop on the Rupture blog tour!

I read Snowblind just a few days ago then immediately had to start Rupture to read more of Jonasson’s gorgeous writing and to find out more about the intriguing Ari Thor. There’s just something about him that’s captivating and leaves you wanting more.

The residents of Siglufjörður are in a panic because a serious illness was brought to their community by an out of towner. When the man dies then someone else falls ill, they are quarantined and a bit of hysteria ensues. Ari Thor is one of the few people that still leaves his house as he has to work even though there isn’t much keeping him busy at the moment. When he’s approached by Hedinn, a man with some questions about an old and mysterious family photograph, he welcomes the distraction.  He enlists the help of Isrun, a news reporter who is juggling multiple stories. What they uncover is a dark family secret which some serious implications for the future.

There are a few storylines running alongside each other here. First, Ari Thor is digging into the old photo from the fifties that’s linked to a cold case that was apparently solved, but he’s not so sure, then Isrun is covering the kidnapping of a child, and finally a politicians son is run over and killed. When links are discovered it’s very clear that someone is hell bent on revenge, but who? And why?

No one does atmospheric more beautifully than Jonasson, and one of my favorite scenes in Rupture was when Ari Thor and the local priest visit Hedinsfjörður to follow a lead about the photograph taken there. It’s completely uninhabited now and is totally dark and deserted when they visit. I’m not one to be afraid of the dark yet I found myself a bit panicky and anxious for them to hurry up and get out of there, it was very chilling and creepy.

Jonasson’s writing style is very purposeful and totally unmatched by anyone else. Every single word has a meaning deeper than its literal definition, yet there is a simplicity and a quiet gentleness about it. Despite this elegant approach, he is still able to convey a quiet intensity that is more powerful than an in your face approach. He’s very cautious about what he reveals to the reader only letting you in on secrets when the timing is absolutely perfect.

This is another classic murder mystery with an icy Icelandic twist, so very perfect for a winter read. As always, the characterization is deep, rich and complex which adds another layer to the story. I can’t say enough good things about this book or the author, just go ahead and read this series already.

Review:

Welcome to my second stop on the blog tour for Corrupt Me. If you missed my first one, you can find it here. I’m so excited to share my thoughts today.

I have to start by talking about the characters here, as much as I loved the plot they were my favorite aspect. Izzie is such a bad ass, I want to be her. Yes, she’s gorgeous but that’s not why I envy her, she’s also strong, confident, bold and she doesn’t take shit from anyone. She may be young but she doesn’t scare easily and her loyalty is admirable. If Izzie loves you, she considers you family and she will do anything to protect the ones she loves. At first glance Luca seems like a typical fraternity douche bag. Thank god there is more to him than meets the eye, though by Quinn’s descriptions he’s pretty easy on the eyes. Despite being the son of Philly’s mob boss he has a sweet and tender side that made me melt.

Izzie and Luca together were adorable and sexy. I loved that she wasn’t easily swayed by his charms, he’s used to women falling at his feet so to see him struggle was endearing and cute. Their chemistry is HOT, you can feel the electricity in the air and when they finally hook up, it’s beyond sexy and spicy.

Besides the two captivating main characters, I loved some others as well, especially Luca’s mom. She’s a typical Italian mother, but she was so sweet with both Luca and Izzie that I found myself wanting an invite to one of her famous Sunday dinners. Izzie’s best friend Silvia was also so much fun, everyone needs a friend like her.

While the plot is heavily centered around
Izzie and Luca’s love story, I loved all the mafia stuff going on as well. The danger, the FBI involvement, the gambling, is all exciting and added some awesome suspense to the story. As a fan of well wrapped up ending, I totally appreciated the epilogue which answered all of my pending questions and even surprised me as well. I just have one question for Jill, when is book two?!

Overall rating: 4.5/5

Review:

I’m so excited to be a stop on the blog tour for Aftermath today. (Don’t miss the giveaway at the end of this post, it’s awesome!) This was such a compelling read and it broke my heart more than once, but then Kenzie slowly pieced it back together again. Why do I love when an author does this to me?!

Charlotte was abducted when she was eleven and now it’s four years later and she is free. But is she really free now? Yes, the daily horrors she endured have finally come to a stop, but her nightmare is far from over. Everything changed while she was imprisoned and her entire family is not what she expected whatsoever. They went through their own version of hell while Charlotte was missing, but can they learn to come back together and start a new chapter in their lives?

This was such an unbelievably sad story, as a parent it really gutted me. I found that I could relate to every single one of them on some level. Charlotte’s mom turned to alcohol, which can you blame her? I sure didn’t, it makes me physically ill to imagine her pain. Can you fathom the horrors she must have pictured her daughter experiencing? Her dad went in the other direction and put all of his time and effort into searching for her. Alexa is her twin sister and she just went completely off the rails turning to sex and drugs to mask her pain. Their family was completely shattered the day Charlotte went missing and it was awful but also totally believable. I wanted to protect and hug each and every one of them.

This is a dark YA novel, there is no tidy happy ever after here, but it’s real and raw. I loved the emotional journey this book took me on and and there were some shocking turns that I was not expecting at all. Even though the topic was really difficult Kensie wrote this in a very respectful manner and raised awareness about an unfortunately realistic subject.

Review:

Do I have a fun Christmas Eve treat for you lovelies today! I’m delighted to be one of the stops for the blog tour for It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Chick Lit. This was a merry and bright collection of short stories from some fabulous chick lit authors, some which were new to me. What a fun way to discover new authors! This book was such a sparkly and festive read,  it really helped keep me in a Christmas mood and bite sized romantic comedies complimented my Christmas cookies quite nicely. As I write this post, the Kindle version of this book is FREE! I can’t promise it still is, but you should definitely check it out.

While I definitely liked all of the stories offered here, I did have my favorites so I’ll be sharing my thoughts about the ones that I loved the most!

The Miraculous Power of Butter Cookies by Holly Tierney-Bedord

Brandi and her two sisters, Barbara and Bonnie decide to enter a holiday baking competition and hilarity ensues. Their mother, Sally has passed away and the family crumbled in the wake of her loss. There were some funny moments and I loved how it was all about reuniting family.

Jingle Bells and Social Fails by Jax Abbey

I totally fell in love with the main character in this one. Her name is Reese and she’s heading to meet her boyfriend Javi’s parents for the first time. She is the queen of social mishaps and I laughed so much while reading this! This was my first time reading anything by Abbey but it won’t be my last.

I’m Scheming of a White Christmas by Kate O’Keefe

Tilly unexpectedly ruins into her high school crush, Brady and doesn’t know whether to be mortified or excited. He humiliated her back in the day and now it’s her time for revenge in the form of poop. Don’t ask, just read this wickedly funny story!

All I Want For Christmas Is…? by Monique McDonell

Miranda is a cranky and cynical ER doctor who has returned home for the holidays in Australia. Her beloved cousin, Anna is getting married and her wedding wouldn’t be out of place in 1987. She hasn’t changed her plans for bridesmaids dresses and decor since she was ten. Miranda meets Connor who owns the local coffee shop and sparks fly. I loved that her character developed so greatly in such a short time, it was sweet.

S.E. Babin is an award-winning author with a passion for writing books with a paranormal twist. Whether it’s romance or mystery, she loves taking the norm and turning it into the extraordinary. Her love of reading turned into a curious exploration to see whether or not she could write her own novel. Beginning with discarded pages of angsty novels and a slightly popular reimagining of Beowulf’s Grendel in her high school English class, Sheryl spent way too much time in the library, killing any chance of her becoming a cheerleader or anything even remotely cool.

geralyncorcillo

First and foremost, Geralyn Corcillo loves reader reviews! In other news…When she was a kid growing up in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Geralyn Vivian Ruane Corcillo dreamed of one day becoming the superhero Dyna Girl. So, she did her best and grew up to constantly pick up litter and rescue animals. At home, she loves watching old movies, British mysteries, and the NY Giants. Corcillo lives in a drafty old house in Hollywood with her husband Ron, a guy who’s even cooler than Kip Dynamite.

Amy Gettinger lives in Orange County, California with her husband and her two piteous poodles under the shade of a very noisy old eucalyptus windrow full of crows and wild parrots. When she’s not writing novels, she’s creating Reader’s Theater plays and coaching a local senior group to perform them, complete with big bad wolves, feather boas and tiaras.

A Durham, North Carolina native and graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jax Abbey bleeds Carolina blue. By day she molds the young, bright minds of the future, but at night you can find her furiously pounding the keyboard as she funnels the zany ideas and quirky characters from her brain to the computer. When Jax isn’t telling preschoolers to keep their hands to themselves or telling her characters to simmer down, she loves to spend time with her significant other, Tyler, and her TinyDog.

Tracy’s love of writing began at nine years old. She wrote stories about aliens at school, machines that did homework for you, and penguins. Now she pens books and short stories about romance. She loves to read a great book, whether it be romance or science fiction, or any genre in between, or pop popcorn and catch up on her favorite TV shows or movies. She’s been known to crush a candy or two as well. Her first romance novel, Pieces of it All, released in May 2014 followed in December with Caching In, a romance mixed with the hobby of geocaching. She also has written several short stories.

Kate O’Keefe – I write funny, sexy, feel-good romantic comedies.

I’ve loved rom coms, romance, and chick lit since I first encountered Bridget Jones as a young, impressionable writer. It really was a match made in chick lit heaven.

I’ve been a teacher and a sales executive, but am now content as a mother and writer, madly scribbling all the ideas I’ve accumulated during my time on this planet we call home.

I live and love in beautiful New Zealand–where my novels are all set–with my wonderful family and my two very scruffy, naughty dogs.

Monique McDonell – I am an Australian author who writes fun, flirty contemporary women’s fiction including chick lit and romance. After many attempts writing books that made me miserable I decided to write books with happy endings and have been loving the journey ever since.

I live on Sydney’s Northern Beaches with my husband and daughter which probably explains why the beach features in so many of my novels and why people describe them as excellent beach reads.

Laurie Baxter has degrees in both puppetry and screenwriting because let’s face it, majoring in English would have been no more useful and way less fun. She loves chocolate, ice cream, chocolate ice cream, dogs, New York City, old movies, modern architecture, all kinds of theater, and music from before she was born. Her eighth grade English teacher told her to become a writer, so she did.

Review:

I have to start by saying that the proceeds from the sale of this brilliant collection go to two very worthy causes, Sophie’s Appeal and Hospice UK. I’m honored to be one of the stops for the blog tour today and can’t wait to tell you all about this phenomenal compilation. Check out the book trailer as well.

Since there are forty stories in this collection I won’t review every single one separately, but I do want to mention that as a whole they are fantastic. There were none I actively disliked, I really enjoyed something about each of them. I’ll highlight my favorite ones, but there really is something for everyone here, especially if you’re a thriller fan. I haven’t read many short stories but this experience opened up my eyes and made me realize how enjoyable it can be. Who knew a few pages could pack such a huge punch?

The Shoes Maketh the Man by Louise Jensen

Being a huge Jensen fan I was ecstatic to see she was one of the participating authors for Dark Minds. Her story is about an elderly man named Bill who’s wife Maureen has passed leaving him a widow.  Pensioners are being murdered in his area, is he next? It was creepy and pulled off quite a twist within a few pages.

Never Tell a Lie by Tara Lyons

This is about an un named man who has an obsession with a beautiful woman named Fiona who he meets when she visits the coffee shop where he works. It’s obsessive, dark and menacing.

By The Water by Betsy Reavley

Christine wakes up in a mental institution and has no idea why or what happened to land her there. Freaks me out just thinking about it! This was very chilling.

Slow Roast Pork by S. E. Lynes

An un named woman this time who’s husband, Peter disappears. She seems distraught but does she know where he is? Or is she just a good actress? This was chilling in its intensity.
Sticky Fingers by J. T. Lawrence

Nikki is a kleptomaniac, she’s not hurting for money she’s actually a wealthy housewife. She just can’t help herself, but is her time finally up? I loved the glimpse into her twisted mind and thought processes.

Hidden by K. A. Richardson

Don’t want to say anything besides it is extremely creepy and graphic but excellent in its depravity.

I’ve Gone by Anita Waller

Laura’s husband Kevin is missing all that’s left is a note that says I’ve gone. This one was heartbreaking and shocking.
Be Careful What You Wish for by Peter Best

Sammy has found herself unwittingly entangled with the mafia in NYC. This is very action packed and there are twists until the very last sentence.

Dangerous Actions by M. A. Comley

Joanne and Beth  are two best friends who meet a new guy on Facebook but social media can be deadly… I can’t say much more than that, but I was thoroughly impressed!
Captive by Stephen Edger

Daisy is kidnapped by Tim when she’s 6. There is quite a lot of action and intensity for a short story. My pulse was pounding as waited to see what her fate would be.

That’s just a taste of what this amazing collection has to offer, there are so many excellent stories that you have to read for yourself! It’s SUCH a good cause, grab your copy, you won’t be disappointed. (Buy links are at the top of this post)
